Baseball: H. Matsui left out of lineup again
ATLANTA, Georgia (Kyodo) -- Designated hitter Hideki Matsui was left out of the lineup again Sunday in the Los Angeles Angels' 9-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers.
The 36-year-old Matsui is mired in a slump in which he has hit .204 with four home runs and nine RBIs over his last 27 games.
"(The manager) probably wants to use other players and I haven't been putting up the numbers recently so that's just the way it goes," said the left-handed hitting Matsui, who was held out against right-hander Rick Porcello.
"I want to play every day and I just have to try to deliver to make the manager want to play me."
Angels manager Mike Scioscia said, "His (Matsui's) downturns have been a little longer this year than we would have anticipated. It certainly doesn't mean that he's not going to be close to some of the projections we had."
On Saturday, Matsui batted cleanup for the first time since May 30 in a 10-1 rout of the Tigers. The 2009 World Series MVP with the New York Yankees drew three walks, but grounded out into two double plays.
