punch over one’s weight

今回はDY（11/8/10付）のIs Obama shifting U.S. focus to South Korea?という記事から英語表現を拾います。
オバマ大統領は最近の韓国の目覚ましい発展に目を付け，関係をさらに深めようとしています。これは，韓国が先のG20でのホスト国として世界から一定の評価を得たことが大きく影響しているようです。
William Grimes, founding director of Boston University’s Center for the Study of Asia, said that South Korea has succeeded in “punching over its weight” by hosting the Group 20 summit and winning the appointment of its former foreign minister Ban Ki Moon as the U.N. secretary general.
ここで注目表現はpunch over its weightです。字面通りに捉えると，意味が良く分かりません。そこで辞書を引いてみると，口語表現のpunch above one’s weight「自分の実力以上のものに挑む」であることがわかりました（『オーレックス英和辞典』旺文社）。さらに，LDOCEにはif businesses, organizations, teams, etc punch above your weight, they are successful in an activity or task which usually needs more money, power, skill etc than they seem to have – used in especially in newspapersと定義づけられており，新聞用語であることもわかります。
隣国韓国の発展は著しいものがありますが，日本も負けずに頑張らなければなりませんね。（ゼミ生 persimmon柿生）
