東日本大震災で生じたがれき量の多さが復興への大きな壁になっていますが，その被害は国内だけに留まらないようです。DAILY YOMIURI ONLINE（04/20/11付け）の”Quake debris to reach Hawaii in 2012"という記事から表現を探します。以下記事一部引用です。
Debris swept into the sea after the Great East Japan Earthquake likely will reach the shores of the Hawaiian Islands in about a year and the West Coast of North America in 2014, according to a Japan-U.S. joint research organization.
The International Pacific Research Center made computer forecasts of the movement of the debris, which include destroyed houses and car tires swept out to sea by the March 11 tsunami.
The center, based at the University of Hawaii, predicted the path of the flotsam by using such data as sea currents and movements of observation buoys.

今回注目する語はflotsamです。文脈からだけでも「流れてくるがれき」といったことを表しているのだと想像ができますが，確認のため辞書で調べてみました。『新英和中辞典』（第5版，研究社）には「（遭難船の）浮き荷，漂流貨物，がらくた」とありました。さらに 『OXFORD現代英英辞典』（第6版，Oxford University Press）にもparts of boats, pieces of wood or rubbish/garbage, etc. that are found floating on the sea or along the shore; any kind of rubbish/garbageとあるので，ただのがれきではなく「（日本から流れてくる）水上のがれき」であることがわかります。
最後に，flotsam「浮き荷」と関連してjetsam「投げ荷」やlagan「浮標付き投げ荷」も覚えておきたいですね（『ジーニアス英和大辞典』）。（ゼミ生 pear）

プロ野球が開幕し早くも1週間が経った昨日。各チームのエースが今期二度目マウンドに立ちました。本日のDY（04/20/11付）には千葉ロッテ対西武ライオンズの試合結果が掲載されていました。（以下，記事より抜粋）
Ogino set the table for Iguchi, who made good in the sixth inning on his second chance to open the scoring. Ogino led off with a double, and Iguchi looped one to right field to give the Marines the lead.
今回注目する表現はset the tableです。“食事の準備をする”という意味で知られる表現ですが，この場面ではset the table forで「（人に）お膳立てをする」という意味で使われています（英辞郎on the web）。「お膳立て」という意味の表現は他にも，set（lay / spread） the table，set the stageなどがありました（『プログレッシブ和英中辞典』第3版，小学館）。さらに他の辞書も見てみると，get / have all one’s ducks in a row「用意万端整える」という表現で“お膳立てをする”という意味も表せるようです（『ジー二アス英和辞典』第4版，大修館書店）。今回もひとつの表現を調べることで，さまざまな同意表現を知ることが出来ました。（gacha）

ここで取り上げるのはpurchaseです。高校時代には「〜を購入する」という意味で覚えたと思いますが，ここでは違う意味で使われています。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第4版，大修館書店）によると，purchaseには名詞で「手がかり」や「力を強める[影響力を増す]手段」という意味があるようです。後者の意味を使って，上の英文のbut以下は「Ha Tae Goonのシュートは曽ヶ端を脅かすほどのものではなかった」のように訳すことができます。
purchaseは14世紀初頭の古フランス語であるpourchacier「手に入れる」から来ていると言われています。さらに語根という切り口から見ると，pur-は「…を求めて」で-chaseは「追跡する」です（『ジーニアス英和大辞典』大修館書店）。これらからこの単語は，「何か求めてずっと追い続ける｣というニュアンスが感じ取れます。ここでは「曽ヶ端を脅かしゴールを奪う」ことを求めていたと考えられます。
