華やかなイメージのあるアメリカ合衆国大統領。外交パーティやホワイト・ハウスの宴会にまつわる記事がBBCにありました。今回はPlaying the White House: Entertaining with the US presidentから英語表現を拾います。

さて，リードのoil the wheelsとはどんな意味でしょうか。文字どおりに訳すと「車輪に油をつける」となりますが，これでは意味がわかりません。これは，その文字通りの意味から転じて「物事を円滑に運ぶ」という意味になります。『リーダーズ英和辞典』第２版によるとwheelsはworksに置き換えが可能だとあります。LDOCE 4th Eds.で確認してみると “BrE to help something to be done in business or politics successfully and easily”とあります。つまり，宴会やパーティは大統領にとって毎回楽しいことではなく，外交を円滑に進めるための重要なものであるのです。
続いてdouble upです。『ジーニアス英和辞典』第四版で確認してみますとdouble upの第２義に「［･･･として］兼用される[as]」とありました。さらに，double as Oで「(物が)(一般に)･･･の代わりになる，･･･を兼用する」という意味になります。したがって，本文では「事務所やトイレはアーティストの楽屋の代わりに使われた」と解釈できます。
記事を読んでいて思ったのは，JAZZやアメリカのポップ・カルチャーがホワイト・ハウスに受け入れられるのに，リチャード・ニクソンの時代まで待たなくてはならなかったことです。さらに，ポップ・カルチャーが歓迎されたのは，1969年(ポップ・カルチャー史におけるロックの最盛期)だったことは，なんだか不思議に感じます。(Othello)
