昨年も今年も腱鞘炎
手首が痛む原因が判明しました。腱鞘炎（けんしょうえん）です。さて英語で何と言うのか。答えは約1年前の本ブログにありました。

腱鞘炎を治すには，患部を使わないことが一番手っ取り早い方法です。使いすぎから起こる症状ですので，使わなければいいのです。もしくは，湿布をご利用ください（apply cold pads）。しかし，昨年の同月にも腱鞘炎が扱われるとは。やはり「師走」の名の通り，何かと忙しいのが原因でしょうか。（ゼミ生 Shohei）
resilience
以前にTemple Gateさんが紹介した，根が腐り始め，育成が困難になった岩手県陸前高田市にある「奇跡の一本松」についての記事をJT .Online（12/12/11付）より取り上げます。
RIKUZENTAKANA, Iwate Pref. — The continued survival of the 260-year-old pine tree that withstood the March 11 tsunami in Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, and became a symbol of the city's resilience, is now in doubt because its roots are being killed by exposure to seawater.

今回取り上げる単語はresilienceです。resilienceを辞書で調べてみると「弾力性，回復力；快活，元気」とありました（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版，大修館書店）。またLDOCEによると，the ability to become strong, happy, or successful again after a difficult situation or eventとありました。
以上のことから，resilienceは何か困難な状況や出来事に対して「立ち直る」ことを意味します。色々な人に元気を与えてきた「奇跡の一本松」が枯れることは悲しいですが，一本松の枝から新たな4本の接ぎ木に成功もしているのでこれが人々の新たな支えになってくれればいいなと思います。（ゼミ生 To To To）
jig
元読売巨人軍の「ラミちゃん」こと，Alex Ramirez選手が，話題の横浜DeNAベイスターズへ移籍しました。ラミちゃんの代名詞と言えば，ホームランを打った後の「ダンスパフォーマンス」ですよね。今回はそのダンスに関する英語表現を採りあげます。
The DeNA Yokohama BayStars on Thursday announced the signing of former Yomiuri Giants slugger Alex Ramirez.
Ramirez, a .303 batter with 359 home runs in 11 seasons in Japan, spent his first five years with the Yakult Swallows.
The Venezuelan, also known for performing a post-homer jig, will likely be put in the cleanup role as he chases career goals of 2,000 hits and 400 homers.

今回注目するのはjigです。文脈から，「ダンス」を指しているのは間違いありません。辞書で確認してみると，「ジグ《英国・アイルランドの活発な6/8拍子の踊り》；（その）踊り」とあります（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版，大修館書店）。LDOCEにもa type of quick dance, or a piece of music for this danceとあるように，「活発な」ダンスのことを述べるためにjigを用いたのではないかと考えられます。
蛇足ですが，もう1つ注目することがあります。それは「横浜DeNAベイスターズ」の語順です。上記文章の1文目を見てみると，The DeNA Yokohama BayStarsとなっています。固有名詞であるにも関わらず，語順が異なることに注意です。来期の横浜はいい結果を残せるのでしょうか。（ゼミ生 Lbow−Shoulder）

tmorwingさん、ご指導をありがとうございました。さて、GP君からの出題です。以下のflyはどうか？というもの。さっそく挑戦致します。
Why would Google spend a small fortune of decking out a single floor of its main London office? It’s too easy to say that just because the company makes a billion dollars a month it’s decided to buy staff exotic cappuccino machines, provide a music and games room and even build an in-door park. This is the company, after all, that still flies people around the world in economy. More than most, its top staff know that nobody got rich by throwing money away.
So, extravagant as Google’s new offices are, it’s vital to note that these are the programmers’ areas. The value of a retained engineer to Google is enormous – they are at the heart of everything the company does, and they are at the heart too of a war for talent with Facebook, Twitter, even the British government and of course academia.
このflyの用法は、先日の記事でご指摘いただいたことを踏まえると、なるほどわかります。最初に該当する文の訳を書きますと「グーグルは、そうは言っても、未だにエコノミー・シートで社員を世界中に出張させるような会社だ。」となります。続いてflyの用法についてみてみます。
さっそくLDOCE 5th Ed.で意味を確認したところ第４義に“to take goods or people somewhere by plane”とありました。さらに、The New Oxford Dictionary of Englishで調べてみると“transport in an aircraft”とありました。もうひとつおまけに、研究社の『新英和大辞典』であれば他動詞の第１義のcに「〈貨物・乗客を〉飛行機で運ぶ、輸送する」とあります。これで他動詞flyの用法も頭に入りました。GP君ありがとう！(Othello)

JT. online（12/11/11付）の記事“Angels build brand by reeling in Pujols”より英語表現を拾います。
ANAHEIM, California — Although the Los Angeles Angels still haven't received the bill from their epic holiday shopping spree, they already think they got a whole lot more than a slugger when they signed Albert Pujols to a $254 million contract.
They got a television star for a new rights deal potentially worth $3 billion. They got a face for a franchise that will have a spot among baseball's marquee teams for as long as Pujols' health and talent hold.

今回の表現はmarqueeです。marqueeは名詞で「（品評会・園遊会・サーカスの）大天幕」「マーキー（劇場・ホテルなどの入り口の上に張り出したひさし）；劇場では上演中の作品名が掲げられる」という意味ですが，ここでは形容詞として扱われています。辞書で意味を確認してみると「著名な，人気の高い，優秀な」とありました（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版，大修館書店）。marqueeの語義を調べてみると“a tall rooflike projection above a theater entrance, usually containing the name of a currently featured play or film and its stars.”とあり，この記述からも上記の形容詞の意味が生まれることは容易です。（http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/marquee）
例えば，a marquee playerでは「人気選手」，a marquee nameだと「著名人」などの意味になります。記事のbaseball marquee teamsは「野球の人気球団」という意味を表します。（GP）
