JT Onlineにあった日本の暖房について書かれたエッセイから英語表現を拾います。
Returning to heating, after years of trying to survive the Japanese winter I've found a couple of simple ways to keep my blood from freezing solid while deploying tactical heating in the home. The first is putting on several layers of clothes until I begin to resemble a less cute version of Bibendum, the Michelin Man. I usually opt for a T-shirt/wool underwear/pajama/tracksuit/hooded sweatshirt combo. Plus two pairs of socks, of course.
Another winner is putting an insulating sheet — the one that looks like thick aluminum foil — in your bed between the sheets and the mattress. That really works miracles, I guarantee.

引用したのは筆者が日本での冬を暖かく過ごすための工夫を紹介している部分。その中から今回はwinnerを採り上げます。winnerというと「勝利者；受賞［入賞］者」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）のような意味がすぐに想起されますが，ここでは異なる意味で用いられています。
そこで辞書を引いてみると，上記の意味の他にwinnerには「人気のある［出そうな］もの, 成功した［しそうな］もの［事］」という意味がありました（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』同上）。また，英英辞書にもsomeone or something that is or is likely to be very popular and successfulという解説があります（LDOCE）。このor is likely toが示すように， winnerは勝利や成功を手中におさめたものだけでなく，その可能性をも含んだものを指す語であることがわかります。以上から，今回のanother winnerは「その他のおススメ」と解釈できます。（Koyamamoto）

今季大リーグに移籍する選手の中で現地の期待度が高いのは，やはりダルビッシュ投手のようですが，個人的にはマリナーズに移籍する岩隈久志選手にも期待しています。以下，JT. online（2012/01/31付）の記事より抜粋。

今回注目するのはstealです。動詞で「〈人などが〉〈物を〉〔人・場所から〕盗む」などの意味がありますが，ここでのstealは名詞として使われています。辞書で意味を確認すると「掘り出し物，格安品，もうけ物」などの意味がありました（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版，大修館書店）。また，UG先生が連載されていたMind the gapでも取り上げられていました。
LDOCEを見ると“informal to be very cheap”とあります。以前ブログで「（役に立つ・価値ある）掘り出し物」という意味での“find”が採り上げられていましたが，今回のstealは「安さ」のみに注目した表現であることが伺えます。マリナーズとは1年契約ですが，球団が契約更新を頼みたくなるような活躍を期待したいですね。（GP）

No doubt there are a few red faces at American news channel CNN today after one geographically challenged employee failed to locate London, one of the world’s biggest capital cities, on their map.
The graphic, which aimed to show viewers where the recent phone hacking arrests had taken place, instead pointed to Norfolk, in East Anglia, about 120 miles from the capital.
The humorous but embarrassing blunder, shown on the leading US news channel on Sunday was flagged up by scores of Twitter users on Sunday evening after a viewer immediately spotted the mistake and put it up on the social networking site.

Sumo: Kitanoumi elected to 2nd stint as JSA chief
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Former Japan Sumo Association Chairman Kitanoumi, who resigned in disgrace in 2008 in the wake of a scandal, on Monday became the first in the history of the sport to return to the governing body's top spot.
The 58-year-old Kitanoumi replaces Hanaregoma, who stepped down as part of the JSA Board reshuffling, since he will reach the retirement age of 65 in February 2013.
Kitanoumi became the 12th JSA chairman, elected in a vote among 10 newly elected directors.
"Most importantly, we have to arrange a crisis management system, making strong efforts to avoid a recurrence of scandals," said Kitanoumi. "The sumo association must protect the traditional Japanese sport. I am prepared to devote my life to work for the prosperity of sumo."
Twelve people -- the most since the current candidate system was established in 1968 -- threw their hats in for the JSA board of directors' election, which is held once every two years. Kokonoe (former yokozuna Chiyonofuji) was among the 10 elected to the executive board.

Cars, cash stolen from luxury import car dealership in Ibaraki

Police said Monday that a luxury import car dealership in Tsuchiura, Ibaraki Prefecture, was robbed Sunday of cars, cash and other belongings worth around 8 million yen.
Police said they received a call from an employee of the dealership reporting the robbery, TV Asahi reported. Police said that a crowbar-like implement was used to wrench open a door on the second floor of the property. According to investigators, a safe containing the previous day’s takings and other items were stolen.
Three Mercedes Benz cars, used as display models, were also stolen from the showroom, TV Asahi reported.
A police spokesperson said the robbery took place between 9 p.m. on Saturday, when the last employee left the premises, and around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday when the first employee arrived.
Enter the dragon
昨日，東京国際フォーラムにて映画“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”（邦名『ドラゴン・タトゥーの女』）のプレミア試写会が開催されました。以下，そのことを伝える記事の見出しです。
Enter the dragon
まずこの見出しには2つの意味が掛けられていると思われます。田邉先生から教えて頂いた情報を基に書かせて頂くと，1つ目は，映画のタイトルと今年の干支“辰”が掛けられていますね。2つ目は劇でよく使われる表現が掛けられています。enterには「（劇）〈登場人物が〉登場する，現れる」といった意味があり，例えば“Enter Hamlet.”なら「ハムレット登場。」を意味します（『ウィズダム英和辞典』第2版，三省堂）。ここでは，試写会で出演者が壇上に現れたことを表現しています。
ちなみに，この映画とは関係ありませんが，かの有名な『燃えよドラゴン』は，英語タイトルの“Enter the dragon”を意訳したものとのことです。たった3語の見出しですが，知識があるのと無いのとでは英語の見え方が違ってきます。地道に色々な知識を蓄えていきたいと感じました（GP）。
mangle
フロリダの高速道路で大きな交通事故が発生しました。mangleは「叩き潰す，めちゃくちゃにした」という意味の単語で，原型をとどめないほどになってしまった自動車の様子を表すのにピッタリです。語根である〈mang-（ずたずたに切る）+-le（動作の反復）〉からも，mangleの持つニュアンスを感じることができます（『ジーニアス英和大辞典』大修館書店）。（Sugiuchi）

bring a new buzz
ロンドン・オリンピックに行きたいなあ、と思っていたらThe Telegraphのサイトに小さなガイドの記事がありました。ここから英語表現を拾います。
A fresh and exciting energy – most obvious in the gleaming towers of Canary Wharf, the bold new developments around Stratford, and the 250,000 travellers winging into London City Airport every month – is bringing a new buzz to a very old bend in the River Thames
まず、赤字で示したbring a new buzzについてです。名詞buzzは、「ハチの羽音」の意味から転じて「人がせわしく動く様子」などの意味があります。LDOCE 5th Eds.であれば第２義に“a lot of activity, noise, and excitement”とあります。ここから、bring a new buzzは、「新たな活気を持ち込む」という意味になります。ちなみに bring a new buzzは、ダルヴィッシュ投手の記事でも使われていて、‘Rangers’ Yu Darvish expected to bring new buzz to Arlington’というタイトルで、ダラスの地元紙で使われていました。しかし、問題は、The Telegraphの記事にある"The fresh and exciting energy"は、どこに「新しい活気を持ち込む」のか、ということです。
それでは、To以下のa very old bend in the River Thames.とは、どこのことでしょうか。文脈やほかのニュースからもわかりますが、オリンピックのメインの会場となるEast End of Londonのことです。ちょうど地図を見ると(お手製なので見にくいですが)、河がくねくねと曲がっています。ロンドンの下町、つまりコックニーの生まれ故郷です。
また、このEast Endは、以前は移民と貧困層が多く密集した地区だと言われています。とくに社会的な階級層に属さない人々や、「切り裂きジャック」の事件などで有名な場所です。このようなロンドンの下層階級や地下世界にについてはKellow Chesney著のThe Victorian Underworldが詳しいです。かなり興味深い書籍です。
さて、下町のイメージや貧困層の街であったという背景があっても、現在では、オリンピック・パークやほかの地域などの再開発などによってEast Endは、めまぐるしく変化してきました。わたしがロンドンに行った時も、観光などをして、大いに楽しめました(おしゃれなカフェが並んでいます)。とくにイースト・エンドは若手の芸術家や音楽人などが多いことでも有名です。(Othello)
A Bush makes a statement by saying nothing
田邉先生に興味深い見出し（International Herald Tribune 2012/01/31より）を紹介していただいたので，みなさんにも紹介したいと思います。
フロリダ州予備選を控えるロムニー氏は，元フロリダ州知事でGeorge・W・Bushの弟のJeb Bushに支援を求めましたが，Jeb Bush氏は選挙間際になっても支持するか否かを明らかにしていません。
A Bushは「たくさんいるBushの中の一人」という意味です。ここではJeb Bush氏という元フロリダ州知事でGeorge・W・Bushの弟のことです。makes a statementは「声明を出す」という意味ですが，ここでは「意思表示をする」と捉えることができます。実際はもうリタイアしているJeb Bush氏にmakes a statementというフォーマルな表現を当てているところに，彼の政治的権力の強さが伺えます。さらにby saying nothingですが，「何も言うことなしに」が直訳なので「態度で，行動で」という意味だと解釈できます。声明は普通「声」を伴うものですが，それを「何も言うことなしに」行うという一見矛盾した点が面白いですね。
