dongle

(UG)

BAE Systems' Navsop navigation system rivals GPS

By Katia Moskvitch
Technology reporter, BBC News

The technology can determine your position even if GPS signal is not available

A new positioning system has been developed to complement or even replace current technologies such as GPS.

Made by UK defence firm BAE Systems, it relies on the same signals used by mobile phones, TVs, radios and wi-fi rather than navigation satellites.

The firm says Navsop could help find victims inside buildings during a fire and locate stolen vehicles hidden in underground car parks.

It could also be used in a war if the sat-nav system was turned off.

For now, the prototype is a big box-like piece of hardware placed in the back of one of BAE's cars, which sports a radio antenna on the roof.

But once out on the market, it will be as tiny as a GPS dongle is today - a bit bigger than a coin - says Ramsey Faragher, principal scientist at the BAE Advanced Technology Centre in Chelmsford, near London.

bourse

(UG)

Tokyo bourse 'widens insider trading probe'

TOKYO (AFP) —
Tokyo’s bourse will search the offices of dozens of brokerage houses as part of a widening crackdown on insider trading, a report said Thursday, as lawmakers eye tough new rules to curb the practice.

Japan’s biggest daily, the Yomiuri Shimbun, said the Tokyo Stock Exchange planned to inspect about 50 investment firms to help restore investor confidence after a string of scandals involving the leak of market-sensitive information.

haul

(UG)

Zoo that lost 30 squirrels in typhoon recaptures 38
NATIONAL JUN. 29, 2012 - 03:45PM JST ( 20 )TOKYO —

Japanese zookeepers who lost 30 squirrels after a typhoon damaged their enclosure said Thursday their recovery efforts had exceeded expectations—with 38 animals back in captivity.

The bushy-tailed rodents made a break for freedom when a tree felled by a typhoon last week cut through netting at Tokyo’s Inokashira Park Zoo.

But after days of trapping the sharp-toothed creatures, a spokeswoman for the zoo said the haul had been more successful than expected and a total of 38 had been “recaptured”.

“We still receive about four to five reports a day from witnesses,” said Eri Tsushima. “We will continue setting traps as long as people keep reporting squirrel sightings to us.”

Most of the animals were caught in the surrounding park area, and Tsushima said keepers would be checking that all of those taken into captivity had the microchips the zoo implanted into its own squirrels.

She acknowledged that the ranks of recaptured animals could have been swollen by the wild squirrels who live in the park.

“We simply don’t know yet,” she said.

arch-foe

JAPAN TODAY(Jun,29,2012)

Google's Chrome browser to be available on Apple's iPad, iPhone

Google Inc’s Chrome, the world’s top Internet browser, is now available on the iPhone and iPad, as Apple Inc finally granted access to its arch-foe’s more popular Web-surfing app.

At Google’s annual I/O developer conference in San Francisco on Thursday, company executives announced the development as well as a limited launch of a cloud-computing and hosting service to take on Amazon.com’s thriving Web services arm.

Both moves underscore how Google is moving quickly to safeguard its dominant Internet presence. Launched in 2008, Google’s browser overtook Microsoft Corp’s Internet Explorer in May as the world’s most popular, according to analytics company StatCounter.

“No matter which device you’re using, we are working really hard across all important software platforms,” Google Senior Vice President Sundar Pichai said. “We want to make sure it’s about the user.”

(EnDough)
