豪雨災害に見舞われた九州に台風 Khanunが向かっています。lashingはwhiplashという単語にもあるように「雨，波などが激しく打ちつける」という意味です。他に思い出すのはeyelashの-lashですが，こちらの方は「糸」に関係し，laceと語源を同じくするとUG先生に教わったことがあります。

Meteorologists have warned further downpours in northern Kyushu could trigger more landslides

TOKYO —　Flood-battered Kyushu on Tuesday braced for a typhoon amid fears it could heap further misery on an area where at least 32 are dead or missing after record rainfall.

Typhoon Khanun was lashing the Amami island chain, south of Kyushu where four days of torrential rain have sparked landslides and flooding, forcing hundreds of thousands of people from their homes.

Khanun—“jack fruit” in Thai—packing winds of up to 108 kilometers per hour, is moving west-northwest at 30 kilometers per hour and is expected to graze the west of Kyushu on Wednesday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
