Drunk driver plows into line of cars, killing one motorist

KANAGAWA —
Police said Monday they have charged a 35-year-old man with vehicular homicide after he caused a six-car pileup in Ebina, Kanagawa Prefecture, on Sunday, while driving under the influence of alcohol. The driver of one of the cars died in the accident, police said.
According to police, the suspect, who has been named as office worker Takeshi Kaito, crashed his car into the rear of a line of cars and a truck approaching a red light on Route 246 at about 3:10 a.m., Fuji TV reported. Police said three of the cars caught fire following the crash. The driver of the first car, Kentaro Sato, 35, from Machida, died at the scene.
During police questioning, Kaito was quoted by police as saying he had been drinking at a bar in Ebina, Fuji reported. He said he was trying to light a cigarette when he rear-ended the car in front of him.

(OALD)
homicide: the crime of killing sb deliberately ( compare culpable homicide )
murder: the crime of killing sb deliberately
(Minnesota)
manslaughter: the crime of killing sb illegally but not deliberately

Suzuki will simply walk over to the other side of the ballpark

Yankees acquire Ichiro for two prospects

The Mariners made it official Monday evening: Ichiro Suzuki is heading to the Yankees.

The Yankees will send right-handers DJ Mitchell and Danny Farquhar to Seattle in exchange for Suzuki, the Japanese superstar with 2,533 career Major League hits in 12 seasons with the Mariners. The deal also includes cash considerations.

The Yankees and Mariners will play Monday night at 10:10 p.m. ET at Safeco Field, so Suzuki will simply walk over to the other side of the ballpark and line up against the only American club for which he's ever played.

New York has been in need of outfield depth without injured left fielder Brett Gardner, who will undergo arthroscopic elbow surgery. The Yankees have primarily used veterans Raul Ibanez and Andruw Jones in left field this season.

Mitchell, 25, has spent most of the season with Triple-A Scranton. He is 6-4 with a 5.04 ERA in 15 games this season at Triple-A. He also made four appearances in the Majors this season, posting a 3.86 ERA.

Farquhar is also 25 years old. He has spent the 2012 season in the Minor League systems of three clubs, the Blue Jays, A's and Yankees. He has combined to go 2-3, with a 3.33 ERA and five saves in 32 games.

contain

以下はNYT. com(2012/07/24付)の記事から抜粋。
SEATTLE — In their search for help in the outfield, the Yankees explored several modest options, before making a more splashy move on Monday, when they acquired the veteran outfielder Ichiro Suzuki.
The Yankees sent minor league pitchers D. J. Mitchell and Danny Farquhar to the Mariners in exchange for Suzuki, whose five-year, $90 million contract expires after this season.
The Yankees designated outfielder Dewayne Wise to make room on the roster for Suzuki, a 10-time All-Star who became the first Japan-born position player when he went to Seattle before the 2001 season after nine years in Japan’s Pacific League. Suzuki’s success in the majors leagues helped paved the way for many other players, including the former Yankee Hideki Matsui.
“I am overcome with feelings when I think of the times I spent with the fans here,” an emotional Suzuki said through an interpreter.
Suzuki had asked the rebuilding Mariners about two weeks ago for a trade to a contending team. On Monday, they found that team.
“I am going from a team with the most losses to a team with the most wins,” Suzuki said, “so I am not able to contain my excitement in that regard.”

Webster onlineは "to engage in bargaining : trade" と定義しています。 (UG)

Yankees trade: Ichiro asked Mariners to deal him weeks ago

Mariners All-Star outfielder Ichiro was traded Monday to the Yankees for two minor-leaguers and cash considerations.

By Larry Stone
Seattle Times staff reporter

Mariners players were sitting around the clubhouse Monday afternoon when they heard jaw-dropping news on television: Ichiro, the franchise's icon since coming over from Japan in 2001, had been traded to the Yankees.

"I was shocked when I saw the TV. I think the whole clubhouse is — the whole baseball world," Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders said. "When you picture Ichi, you always picture him with No. 51 in a Mariner uniform."

But now he'll be wearing No. 31 for the Yankees. And by remarkable coincidence, the Yankees are in Seattle for a series at Safeco Field, and Ichiro wore a New York uniform for the first time Monday night in a start against his former team.

When he came to bat in the third inning, the crowd of 29,911 gave him an extended ovation. He stepped out of the batter's box, took off his helmet and bowed twice to the crowd. Ichiro then lined a single to center field, the 2,534th hit of his major-league career and the first when he wasn't wearing a Mariners uniform.

Earlier, his eyes glistening at a hastily called news conference, Ichiro began by thanking the fans and said, "When I think about the last 11 ½ years, about the time and feelings of the last 11 ½ years, and when I imagine taking off a Mariners uniform, I was overcome with sadness. It has made this a very difficult decision to make."

But he admitted the prospect of moving from the last-place Mariners to the first-place Yankees — and a chance for his first-ever World Series appearance — was enticing.

"I went from a team that's had the most losses to a team having the most wins, so it's been hard to maintain my excitement in that regard," he said through interpreter Ken Barron.

lawyer up

Holmes, 24 was not cooperated with officials as he was held in solitary confinement at a Denver-area county detention facility, Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said.
“He lawyered up. He’s not talking to us,” the chief said. (JT 2012/07/24)

lawyer upはto stop answering questions during a police interrogation and request a lawyerという意味で,日本語でいうと「口を閉ざす」や「黙秘する」でしょうか(Urban Dictionary)。 (Sugiuchi)
