サッカーの国際親善試合日本対ベネズエラが昨夜、札幌ドームで行われ、日本は1-1で引き分けました。

カタカナとして日本語の中に定着しているcancelには「（物事を）相殺する、釣り合わす」という意味があります。ここは「振り出しにもどる」あたりでしょう。

考えてみれば、cancelの語源は「棒引きにする」なのでこっちの方がオリジナル（？）の用法です。「キャンセルする」だけにとらわれていてはいけないということです。なお、蛇足ですが原文は英国式の綴りです。（UG）
