Cats in leather jackets, polka-dot pinafores and pastel-coloured cartoons only begin to explain the aesthetic of Japan’s culture of kawaii.
polka-dotを取り上げます。最初にpolkaの意味を確認してみると、これは「Bohemia起源の二人組み二拍子舞踏（ポルカ）」という意味になります。次にpolka-dotで調べてみると、「水玉模様の」（『ジーニアス英和辞典 第３版』大修館）とあり、英英辞典には’one of a number of round dots repeated to form a regular pattern on fabric’ODOと定義されていました。
今回は語源も気になったので、Wikipedia調べてみると、水玉模様はポルカダンスのポルカから由来しているのですが、模様とダンスとの間には概念的には関係がなく、ポルカダンスは当時非常に人気を博しており、polkaの名前が沢山の商品にも取り入れられたため、ダンスの知名度との相乗効果によりpolka-dotという語が定着したようです。詳しくはこちらをご参照下さい。http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polka_dot (Shou-VR*)

先程と同じニュースから英語の落ち穂拾いをします。
She is already looking forward to this July’s Hyper Japan expo in Earls Court – a showcase of all aspects of Japanese pop culture. One of the main attractions is the kawaii fashion catwalk, which gives a chance for British fans to parade their take on Tokyo street style.
catwalkは以前ブログにも何度か登場していますが、http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20110215/1297774821、http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20120217/1329466982、復習の意味も兼ねて再掲させて頂きます。もともとは、「鉄橋や機関室などに設けてある橋状の狭い通路」を意味しますが、ここでは「（ファッションショーの）客席に突き出た細長いステージ」（『ジーニアス英和辞典 第３版』大修館）そして、’a platform extending into an auditorium, along which models walk to display clothes in fashion shows’ODOという意味になります。
日本の文化が徐々に海外でも受け入れられ始めていると思うと感慨深いものがあります。(Shou-VR*)

今回は記事中のgiving me cheekという箇所に注目してみたいと思います。cheekといえば「頬」という意味で英語学習者で無くてもチークという言葉を聞いたことがあるかと思いますが、辞書を引いてみると「(主に英・くだけて)【具体例ではa 〜】生意気な[ずうずうしい]言葉[行動，態度]」(『ウィズダム英和辞典 第二版』三省堂)という意味もある事が分かりました。そして、今回の記事中の様にgive A cheekという形では「A〈人〉に対して生意気にふるまう」(ibid)という意味になることがわかりました。(Astroriver)

少々古い記事で申し訳ないのですが、面白い表現があったのでそこから表現を拾います。テニスの話題です。

先程と同じニュースの記事中から英語の落ち穂拾いをします。

早速best-of-fiveを手持ちの辞書で確認してみると、「5試合中3試合に勝てばよい，5番勝負の」（『リーダーズ英和辞典』第２版，研究社）と定義されており、もう一つの辞書の例文を見てみると、play the best of three [five] gamesで「3[5]回勝ったほうが勝ち」（『ジーニアス英和辞典 第３版』大修館）と記載されていました。念のため英英辞典も当たってみたところ’ victory achieved by winning the majority of a specified odd number of games.'ODOと載っていました。(Shou-VR*)

今回取り上げる表現はsorryです。
sorryは誰もが知っている単語ですが、「みじめな、哀れな、気の毒な；下手な、くだらない」などの意味もあります。（『ジーニアス英和辞典 第4版』大修館）
今回はしっくりくる意味がなかったのですが、「初日に78も打ってしまったあとで」の意味なので、私は「痛恨の初日78のあとで」のように訳してみました。
今回はイアン・ポールター選手などの実力者も軒並み予選落ちをしているため、この試合がどれ程厳しいものであったかがわかりますね。ちなみに、この試合で優勝したマテオ・マナセロ選手は、大会最年少優勝だそうです。こちらの記事もご参照ください。（Haramii）

リーグ優勝をかけたNBAプレイオフ第4戦はthe Indiana Pacersがthe Miami Heatを99-92で降し，対戦成績を2勝2敗のタイにしました。HeatのエースLeBron James選手のコメントから英語表現を拾います。
「〜を見る」で知られるlook atですが，to examine something and try to find out what is wrong with it（LDOCE）とあるように「よく考え，調べる」というニュアンスを持つことがわかります。「〜を見る」以上に広い意味を持つ単語なのですね。（Koyamamoto）
