アメリカは、半世紀以上キューバとの外交を断絶してきました。しかし、オバマ大統領は、国交正常化に向けて交渉を行うと発表しました。

この記事の中で気になった単語が”detente”です。『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』（大修館書店）によると、「（国際関係の）緊張緩和、デタント」という意味がありました。語源をネットで調べてみると、フランス語の「緊張を解くこと」という単語からきていることが分かりました。今後アメリカとキューバの関係がどうなるか気になります。(Nao)

HAVANA (AP) -- Cubans overwhelmingly expect detente with the United States to alter their widely disliked economic system, according to a rare poll of 1,200 people across the island.

The poll released Wednesday found less optimism about Cuba's political future, with 54 percent saying the single-party government would not change as a result of closer ties. The poll found that 53 percent of Cubans are dissatisfied with the political system and 52 percent want more than one political party.
