　米共和党の討論会に関する記事です。この討論会を終えると，次は，12月の中旬まで行われず，今回の論争は，大統領選にとって大きな位置づけとなるようです。　
　記事の中で気になった表現は"square off"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）によると「けんか[競争]の構え[姿勢]をとる」という意味がありました。SPACEALCには「〔ボクシングなどで戦うために〕身構えること」と書かれており，"square"をリングに見立てているようです。見出の"spar"も「〘ボクシング〙スパーリングをする」という意味があり（『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）），今回取り上げた単語と掛けているのではないかと考えました。（Ume）

Republicans set to spar as field of candidates narrows

The top eight Republican presidential contenders are set to square off in Milwaukee for the fourth debate the party has held in this election cycle.
With fewer candidates on stage than any previous Republican debate, the hosts are promising questions focused on policy over personality.
It is the last match-up of Republicans until mid-December, and could play a strong role in shaping the race.
