“Mistletube”
ロンドンの地下鉄の車内に誰かがヤドリギを飾ったようです。
Someone has decided to put mistletoe on the London Underground
Some bright spark has decided to get Londoners - who do not even look each other in the eye on public transport - to snog on the London Underground.
They have strung up mistletoe all around the network.
Some think it's cute, because they are either deluded or not from London, but most have been studiously ignoring it, according to the pictures.
Perhaps it could add some whimsy to a commute.
People may not kiss, but a few bemused frowns could be shared.
The people behind it have called themselves 'Mistletube', which is an interesting portmanteau.
They say on their website: "We wanted to bring some Christmas cheer to one of the most miserable places in the capital.
"So we put some love on the line and created #Mistletube.
"Merry Christmas, London".
Will it be successful? Probably not, but perhaps it is charming that someone has tried to inject some love into the cold hearts of commuters.
今回取り上げるのは“Mistletube”です。これは“mistletoe”と“tube”が混ざったものであると考えました。“mistletoe”は「ヤドリギ≪花言葉は「困難を克服する」。不滅・豊饒を象徴≫」、“tube”は「地下鉄」を表しています。“the kissing under the mistletoe”で「ヤドリギの下でキス≪男性はクリスマスの飾りのヤドリギの下にいる女性にはキスをしてもよいということになっている≫」という表現があるように、クリスマスを感じる１つの要素として挙げられるようです。
これは上記の記事にもある通り、“portmanteau”の１つの例になります。過去に先輩が取り上げられていますが、“portmanteau”は、「（革製の）旅行かばん≪両開きで長方形≫」（『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』大修館書店）“a very large SUITCASE that opens into two parts”（LDOCE）という意味があります。しかしここでは「旅行かばん」ではなく、「かばん語、混成語（blend）≪２語の一部が混交して１語になったもの；smog（←smoke + fog）, brunch（breakfast + lunch）など≫」、“a portmanteau word is made by combining the sound and meaning of two other words, for example 'edutainment' combines 'education' and 'entertainment'”（LDOCE）を表し、この記事の中での混成語は“Mistletube”となります。クリスマスの雰囲気を感じられる記事でした。（Green）
