whitebait

(Koyamamoto)

We ordered whitebait, squid, eel and shrimp, the latter’s heads served separately, much to Asger and Emil’s consternation. It was exquisite, all of it: the crunchy, gnarled batter glisten yet virtually greaseless; the fish cooked to moist, still-steaming perfection within. (SUSHI AND BEYOND, p46)

roil

JERUSALEM — Israel on Sunday indicted four Jewish extremists suspected in a July arson attack on a Palestinian home that killed a toddler and his parents — a case that has been unsolved for months and helped fuel the current wave of Israeli-Palestinian violence.

中略

Palestinians cite the Duma incident as a factor in the three-month wave of attacks and clashes roiling the region, saying they are frustrated by years of unchecked settler violence.

まず、意味を確認してみると、Oxford Dictionary On-lineには、“to move quickly and violently in different directions”と記載されていました。

(Nao)

primordial

National dream comes true with element naming right

It is a primordial theme of science to search for new elements and investigate their properties. In a field largely fostered in Western European countries, RIKEN has been credited with discovering element 113.

LDOCEでは、"existing at the beginning of time or the beginning of the Earth"と定義されており、例文には"the primordial sea"とありました。 (Starlight)

the best of time and the worst of time 回答

http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20160103/1451796142

(A Tale of Two Cities)の初めに書かれている一節,It was the best of times, it was the worst of time,…

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way. . . .

(Kawada)

speak out of turn

George Lucas apologises for calling Disney 'white slavers'

We all make mistakes, and occasionally speak out of turn – and now Star Wars creator George Lucas has admitted that he may have gone a little too far, after he referred to the Disney Corporation, current owners of the Star Wars franchise and the company behind new instalment The Force Awakens, as “white slavers”.

In a statement, released by Disney (it’s difficult not to picture Lucas in one of Kylo Ren’s torture cells – although we’re sure this isn’t the case), the producer-director described the remarks as “inappropriate”.

Here’s his apology in full:

I misspoke and used a very inappropriate analogy and for that I apologise. I have been working with Disney for 40 years and chose them as the custodians of Star Wars because of my great respect for the company and Bob Iger’s leadership. Disney is doing an incredible job of taking care of and expanding the franchise. I rarely go out with statements to clarify my feelings but I feel it is important to make it clear that I am thrilled that Disney has the franchise and is moving it in such exciting directions in film, television and the parks.

まず“out of turn”をOxford Dictionary on-lineで調べてみると、“At a time when it is not one’s turn”という定義が見つかり、そこから「順番を間違えて」といった意味があると分かりました。 (ninetails)

HONOLULU — With Washington increasingly consumed by the November elections, President Obama will spend much of his final year in office traveling the country and the world.

中略

Mr. Obama has often told audiences that his favorite presidential perk is having his own plane, but he has noted that “my lease is running out.” So it appears, while he still has the opportunity, that he is going to put that plane to a lot of use.

手持ちの辞書では意味が載っていなかったので、LDOCEで調べてみると"something that you get legally from your work in addition to your wages, such as goods, meals, or a car"とありました。

(lua)

gaffer tape

(Ume)

The little car you can drive in France without a licence

On market day in my nearest town here in Brittany the little voitures sans permis splutter into the main street. Although the literal translation is "car without licence" it is in fact the driver who doesn't need to bother himself or herself with any proof of ability behind the wheel.
Once seen as an anachronism that, given time, would inevitably be legislated out of existence they remain a vital means of transport for an ageing rural population. For the most part they are scruffy and battered. Their bodywork is faded and peeling, often touched-up with a spot of household gloss paint. Wire and gaffer tape hold loose panels together and one I saw had its bumper held in place with washing line fashioned into an elaborate blanket stitch.

out of the mouths of babes

Out of the mouths of babes, real religious truth

On 28 December I performed my annual progress around a Midlands motorway triangle, through sluggish bank holiday traffic, to venerate relatives’ graves. My eight-year-old daughter accompanied me, leavening my loneliness, and I made the dutiful day delightful by insisting we listen to Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds in its entirety. Don’t you wish I was your dad?

本日は記事の見出しにある、"out of the mouths of babes"を取り上げます。

『Wisdom英和辞典 第三版』には定義が見つかりませんでしたが、オンラインで調べてみたところ、Cambridge Dictionaries On-line には "said when a child says something that surprises you because it seems very wise"とありました。The Free Dictionary には"Prov. Children occasionally say remarkable or insightful things."

"Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants you have ordained strength,..." (New King James Version)

I was so stunned that a child of six could be so adult in her perceptions. Out of the mouths of babes...

She's only six but she said, quite rightly, that Harry was afraid of the sitter-out of the mouths of babes, Mother said.

(Dew)

Old habits die hard

(UG)

hand

(Koyamamoto)

I tried to describe to the chef the concept of a deep-fried Mars Bar. He squinted skeptically. I drew a picture in my notebook, he looked more dubious and called another chef over. They conferred and looked at me expectantly, awaiting further clarification. ‘In Scotland – you know, haggis. Sean Connery?’
‘Besides guns and the Bible, they brought tempra,’ writes old Japan hand Donald Richie of the European missionaries who came to Japan in the mid-sixteenth century.
Clearly, thankfully, there were no Scots among them.(SUSHI AND BEYOND, p.49)
