Kiyoshi Kimura, holding knife, president of Kiyomura Co, poses with a bluefin tuna at his Sushi Zanmai restaurant near Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo on Tuesday. Once again, Kimura paid the highest amount at the year’s first auction—and last at Tsukiji—shelling out 14 million yen for the 200-kg fish. In 2013, Kimura paid a record 154.4 million yen for a 222-kilogram tuna

Longman English Dictionary Onlineで確認してみると“to pay a lot of money for something, especially unwillingly”と定義されていました。

この表現の成り立ちは「固く閉じた貝(殻)から身を取り出す(“remove something such as beans or nuts from a shell - LDOCE”)」というshellの動詞形にありました。 (Chris)

N. Korea conducts ‘H-bomb’ test / U.N. expected to get tough after fourth nuclear detonation

SEOUL (AP) — North Korea said Wednesday it had conducted a powerful hydrogen bomb test, a defiant and surprising move that, if confirmed, would be a huge jump in Pyongyang’s quest to improve its still-limited nuclear arsenal.

中略

There has long been skepticism by Washington and nuclear experts on past North Korean claims about H-bombs, which are much more powerful, and much more difficult to make, than atomic bombs. But a confirmed test would be seen as extremely worrying and lead to a strong push for new, tougher sanctions on North Korea at the United Nations. It would also further worsen already abysmal relations between Pyongyang and its neighbors.

LDOCEで調べてみると、“very bad or of bad quality”と定義されていました。 (ninetails)

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- North Korea said it conducted a powerful hydrogen bomb test Wednesday, a defiant and surprising move that, if confirmed, would be a huge jump in Pyongyang's quest to improve its still-limited nuclear arsenal.

中略

The doubts didn't stop jubilation and pride in Pyongyang. A North Korean television anchor, reading a typically propaganda-heavy statement, said a test of a "miniaturized" hydrogen bomb had been a "perfect success" that elevated the country's "nuclear might to the next level." State media later crowed that its "H-bomb of justice" lets it stand firm against U.S. aggression.

さらに、Dictionary.comには、“a feeling of or the expression of joy or exultation”と載っていました。

(Nao)

cog railway

A cog railway chugs up to the slopes around Gornergrat and gives stupendous views of the Monte Rosa range, while the cableways up to the Klein Matterhorn give close-up views of the icon itself, plus access to Cervinia in Italy.

http://edition.cnn.com/2016/01/06/travel/alpine-ski-resorts/index.html

LDOCEには“cog”の定義として“a wheel with small bits sticking out around the edge that fit together with the bits of another wheel as they turn in a machine”とありました。

(bookmark)

Migrant crisis: Turkey police seize fake life jackets

Police in Turkey say they have confiscated more than 1,000 fake life jackets made for migrants wanting to cross the Aegean Sea to Greece.

Officers raided a workshop in the port of Izmir, where they say they found life jackets stuffed with packaging rather than buoyancy aids.

The four workers making the jackets included two young Syrian girls.

On Tuesday, the bodies of 34 migrants were found along Turkey's coast. Many were wearing life jackets.

Several children were among the dead.
It comes one day after the bodies of more than 30 migrants were washed up in Turkey. Their boats capsized in bad weather on the way to the Greek island of Lesbos, the authorities say.

Turkish media published harrowing images of the corpses, many still wearing life jackets that had apparently been of no use.

『ジーニアス英和大辞典』(大修館書店)で確認してみますと「痛ましい,悲惨な」とあり,LDOCEでは “very frightening or shocking and making you feel very upset”と定義されています。

(Inaho)

yield

White House Disputes North Korea’s Claim of Hydrogen Bomb Test

SEOUL, South Korea ― The White House said Wednesday that initial data from its monitoring stations in Asia were “not consistent” with North Korea’s claim that the nuclear test it carried out earlier in the day was its first test of a hydrogen bomb, a far more powerful weapon than the country had previously built.

The statement by Josh Earnest, the White House press secretary, came as the United Nations Security Council condemned the test after a two-hour closed-door meeting, and after China, Britain, France, Japan and other powers indicated that they would consider action against the country.

The United States did not indicate the basis for its skepticism. But the seismic wave left by the explosion was smaller than what most experts would expect from the detonation of a true thermonuclear weapon. Some experts said it was possible that the North had increased the yield of a more traditional device using tritium, a technique that has often been used in the 70-year history of nuclear weapons.

yield-to-weight ration

(ninetails)

circuit breaker#2

(Ume)

Mainland Chinese shares stop trading after 7% plunge

Trading on the mainland Chinese markets was suspended for the day, after shares plunged more than 7% for the second time this week.
The "circuit breaker" rule, a mechanism introduced to stem volatility in the market, was triggered in the first 30 minutes of trading.
Investors are nervous after the central bank moved to weaken the yuan.
This indicates that Beijing is looking to boost exports as China's economy may be slowing more than expected.
