今回取り上げる表現は，“truism”です。まず，意味を確認してみると，Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English online には，“a statement that is clearly true, so that there is no need to say it”と記載されていました。さらに，『ジーニアス英和辞典』（大修館書店）には，「自明の理，わかりきったこと，陳腐な決まり文句」とありました。ちなみに，“cliché”にも「陳腐な決まり文句」という意味がありましたね。こちらの表現は，悪い意味に使われます。
英語と日本語の定義を比較してみると，意味に差異がないように感じます。ここでは，「原油高は，経済に痛手を負い，原油安では，経済成長を促すということは，事実であり，わかりきったことである。」になると思います。(Nao)

"reel"を取り上げます。釣りをする時の「糸をリールで巻く」や「操る」という意味がありますが、ここでは「混乱する, 衝撃を受ける」という意味で使われています。LDOCEでは"to be confused or shocked by a situation"と定義されています。

デリー大学の生物学研究者に関する記事です。Biju教授は両生類であるカエルを研究しております。特に新種を多く発見しており，インドでは200種類以上の未発見のカエルがいること報告した論文で話題となったようです。
記事の中で気になった単語は"chubby"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）には「＜主に赤ん坊･子供が＞（健康的に）まるまるとした[太った], ぽっちゃりとした」などという意味がありました。Oxford Dictionariesには""Plump and roundedと定義されております。Oxford Dictionariesで語源を調べると「ウグイ類｟コイ科の淡水魚｠」を意味する（『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂））"chub"に由来するようです。（Ume）

The phones haven't stopped ringing ever since Dr Biju and his team of scientists announced their latest discovery - an extraordinary tree frog thought to have died out more than a century ago. The usually quiet and cosy book-lined lab with a frosted glass door which says 'The Frog People' is unusually frantic.
But right now, the 52-year-old amphibian researcher - The Economist called Dr Biju the "closest thing Indian herpetology has to a celebrity" in 2011 - is talking about the purple frog, a brand new family of amphibians he discovered in 2003.
This bizarre, pig-nosed frog, found in Western Ghats, a mountain range and a biodiversity hotspot that runs along the western coast of India, uses shovel-like limbs to burrow the earth and live as deep as 20ft (6m) under the ground. National Geographic described it as a frog with a "chubby, purple body and pointed, pig like snout... and unlike any frog on earth".

以前、授業の中でUG先生に教えていただいて興味を持ったバナナの病気についての記事です。バナナの病気「パナマ病」により現在世界中で食べられているバナナの種(Cavendish) に危機が迫っています。
この種は世界中で栽培されている内の約47%を占めており、1950年代にパナマ病により絶えてしまった種を改良し、パナマ病に免疫がある種であったのですが、新種のパナマ病の菌により、絶滅の危機が迫っています。

本日は記事より、"picture-perfect"を拾います。いずれの語も馴染みがあり、よく用いる語ですがこの語が二つ繋がると「形: 絵に描いたように完璧な」の意味になります(『Wisdom英和辞典 第三版』)。 また、Oxford Dictionaries On-line では"Completely lacking in defects or flaws; ideal"と定義されており、"a picture-perfect summer day"との例文がありました。"picture"とあることから、風景などの視覚的なもののみに使うと考えておりましたが、使用例をみるとそうでないことがわかります。例:"picture-perfect plan"(非の打ち所のない計画), "picture-perfect lifestyle"(完璧な生き方)

大関琴奨菊が豪栄道を突き落とし，14勝1敗で初優勝を決めました。日本出身力士の優勝は2006年初場所の栃東以来10年ぶりのこと。
琴奨菊の優勝は日本中を歓喜に包むと同時に驚きを与えたことでしょう。というのも日本出身力士で優勝を狙えたはずの大本命は大関稀勢の里だったのです。記事では稀勢の里the Japanese wrestler with the most realistic shot at snapping 10 years of domination by foreign-born rikishiと表しています。「大本命」をwith the most realistic shot at ~を付けることで表すのが面白いと思い，今回採り上げてみました。（Koyamamoto）

Ozeki Kotoshogiku overpowered Goeido on Sunday to win the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament, becoming the first homegrown wrestler to claim an Emperor's Cup since retired ozeki Tochiazuma won this tournament in 2006.
Holding a one-win lead over Mongolian 35-time champion Hakuho and childhood friend Toyonoshima, Kotoshogiku entered the final day of the 15-day meet in Tokyo needing only a victory to secure the tournament hardware.
And the 31-year-old bruiser from Fukuoka, who was promoted to ozeki in the fall of 2011, did not disappoint, working ozeki Goeido (4-11) up against the ridge, thrusting him down to wrap up the tournament with a 14-1 record and send spectators into raptures at Ryogoku Kokugikan.
Ozeki Kisenosato had been the man tipped as the Japanese wrestler with the most realistic shot at snapping 10 years of domination by foreign-born rikishi such as Hakuho and former yokozuna Asashoryu and restoring national pride in the centuries-old sport.
