I'll eat my hat if...
Huffington Post
2. The Sorting Hat’s Song from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling
It says a lot for the sheer inventiveness of the Harry Potter books that by the time Harry reaches the Great Hall, a singing hat doesn’t seem even slightly out of the ordinary. It’s such a witty song, too. If I were ever to have dinner with a hat, it would be this one.
"Oh, you may not think I’m pretty,
But don’t judge on what you see,
I’ll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me."
http://www.theguardian.com/childrens-books-site/2016/jan/24/top-10-songs-in-childrens-literature?
It’s such a witty song, too."
I'll eat my hat"であると考えられます。このイディオムは"used to say that you think sth is very unlikely to happen"と定義されていました。(Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, 8th)
I'll eat my hat if..."
If she 's here on time, I'll eat my hat! (OALD)
"I’ll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me."
(Dew)
absent-minded
24 hurt in Tokyo tour bus crash; driver, 58, says he was ‘absent-minded’
A tour bus with 30 people aboard crashed into a center divider and a traffic light pole on a street in central Tokyo on Wednesday, injuring 24 passengers, police said.
The police arrested the bus driver, 58-year-old Tadashi Sugawara, at the scene. Sugawara told the police that he had been “absent-minded.”
(Mt.Fuji)
The Cult of Marie Kondo
On Wednesday evening, the tidy and the would-be tidy sat very still on the fourth floor of the Barnes & Noble bookstore at Union Square in Manhattan, craning to hear the soft voice of Marie Kondo, the Japanese author of “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,” as she demonstrated her folding technique on ever more complex garments. She was balletic and masterly. When done, Ms. Kondo received a standing ovation.
The elfin Ms. Kondo, perhaps the world’s only decluttering celebrity, was promoting her new book, “Spark Joy,” a more prescriptive manual (it comes with illustrations) than her last, which is a publishing juggernaut. (Both titles are at the top of the New York Times best-seller list.)
『ジーニアス英和辞典第4版』(大修館書店)では「(世の動き・制度・組織などの)巨大な破壊力,不可抗力;巨大企業」とあり,LDOCEでは “a very powerful force, organization etc whose effect or influence cannot be stopped”と定義されていました。
(Inaho)
his patented hold-and-push
(Kawada)

The storm caused major traffic tie-ups on highways in Kentucky, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
Road accidents Friday night caused a 7-mile-long backlog involving around 500 vehicles on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, a state police spokeswoman said. The traffic stayed there through Saturday afternoon, when police started turning some drivers around and allowing them off at points along the roadway.
Among those stuck on the turnpike: The Duquesne University men's basketball team, on the road after a victory against George Mason in Virginia. Photos that the team posted to Twitter showed senior forward Nick Foschia making a snow angel in the road and a line of vehicles stranded on the highway. Also stuck was the Temple University women's gymnastics team.
http://edition.cnn.com/2016/01/23/us/weather-winter-snowstorm/index.html
LDOCEには“American English a large road for fast traffic that drivers have to pay to use”と定義されていました。
(bookmark)
dire warnings
Dire Warnings Along East Coast as Snow Piles Up
(Nao)
the toast of the town 復習
Nishikori too strong for Tsonga
Eight years ago today, a curly-haired Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was the toast of Melbourne Park; that bounding, thumbs-up celebration breaking out across Rod Laver Arena after crushing world No.2 Rafael Nadal in straight sets to reach his maiden Grand Slam final.
While he would go on to fall to Novak Djokovic in the decider, a breakthrough major was widely tipped for the 22-year-old.
He has been a regular in the top 10 since, but the Frenchman is still searching for that elusive major.
Japan’s No.7 seed Kei Nishikori on Sunday ensured it would not come at this year’s Australian Open.
今回取り上げるのは、“the toast of the town”という表現です。
また、LDOCEでは“to be very popular and praised by many people for something you have done in a particular field of work”と定義されています。(ninetails)
knee cap
Teenager shot in both legs in 'paramilitary style shooting' in Belfast
A teenager has been shot in both legs in a “paramilitary style” attack in West Belfast.
The 17-year-old victim was shot in the Ardmonagh Parade area of the city. The attack happened at around 19:05 last night.
A spokesperson for the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) told The Independent: “Just after 7:05pm, police received a report that a 17 year old male had been shot in both legs in the area.
“He has been taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.”
So called “knee capping” shootings, whereby a victim is shot through both knee caps, are traditionally associated with paramilitary groups in Northern Ireland, such as the IRA. A spokesperson for the PSNI described yesterday’s attack as “a paramilitary style shooting”.
とあり、Merriam-Websterにはkneecapping “the terroristic act or practice of maiming a person's knees (as by gunshot)”と記載されています。
cold air mass
Heavy snow hits western, central Japan; Okinawa feels chill, too
A cold air mass gripped the Japanese archipelago, bringing heavy snow and gusty winds to a wide area of western and central Japan on Sunday, forcing airlines to cancel many flights and West Japan Railway Co to reduce the speed of bullet trains on sections of the Sanyo Shinkansen lines.
The blanket of snow reached as far as southwestern Japanese cities such as Nagasaki and Kagoshima and the temperature in Naha, the prefectural capital of Okinawa, dropped to 8.9 C on Sunday morning, far below the average low for January.
Amami Island, a subtropical island located some 380 kilometers southwest of Kagoshima City, also observed snowfall for the first time in 115 years, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
(Green)

Shinji Kagawa: How the Man Utd reject is flying again with Borussia
Shinji Kagawa. Just as Chicharito has shown at Bayer Leverkusen, little Shinji is proving there's life after Manchester United.
Last season, they were worried at Borussia Dortmund. The fans' favourite had been returned by United - on-loan - a mere shadow of his former self. Even his much-anticipated reunion with coach Jurgen Klopp failed to lift the midfielder. It appeared United had handed back damaged goods.
The great irony is that it was Klopp's decision to step down - and the arrival of Thomas Tuchel in his stead - which reignited Kagawa's football this season.
中略
Suddenly, the nimble goalscoring midfielder is now also becoming known as a ball-winner. His tackling success rate up by almost 8% on last season and in the recent clash with Schalke, he won 65% of challenges.
Kagawa may disagree, but BVB chief Michael Zorc is adamant: "He's back to his old self.
"He's now working at extremely high levels. You get the feeling that he'll never get tired. Shinji is again a very important player for us."
The change in Kagawa's game is noticeable, as Zorc adds: "He does not score as many goals, but he is creating even more than during his first time with us."
Dictionary.comでは”[Adjective] 1. utterly unyielding in attitude or opinion in spite of all appeals, urgings, etc. 2. too hard to cut, break, or pierce. [Noun] 3. any impenetrably or unyieldingly hard substance. 4. a legendary stone of impenetrable hardness, formerly sometimes identified with the diamond.” の点で〕強固な、穀然とした態度をとる〔in/doing about doing〕;動じない、不屈の〔to〕;〔…
調べてみると” a player in a sport such as soccer who gains possession of the ball from an opposing player”(Merriam-Websterより)とあります。
patchy#2
Oxford Dictionaries.comには"Existing or happening in small, isolated areas"と定義されております。 (Ume)
US blizzard 2016: Clearing up after huge snowstorm
Millions of people across the eastern US face huge challenges with the working week set to begin, following a massive snowstorm that virtually paralysed many cities.
Public transport will be patchy, many roads are still treacherous and airports remain severely disrupted.
Government buildings in Washington and many schools will be closed on Monday.
Near record snowfall swept from the capital to New York, with at least 29 deaths reported since Friday.
The fatalities were as a result of car accidents, carbon monoxide poisoning and heart attacks suffered while shovelling snow.
