get under one's skin

Yoko Ono takes The Economist's questions

YOKO ONO has been making art for the better part of six decades, never failing to startle, provoke and sometimes get under the skin. The Musee d'art contemporain (MAC) in Lyon will open a retrospective of her work, "YOKO ONO Lumière de l'aube" ("light of dawn") on March 9th. Ms Ono answered The Economist's questions by e-mail.(中略)

本日は、"get under one's skin"を拾います。

Jack really gets under my skin - he never buys anyone a drink

Fill someone’s mind in a compelling and persistent way" 「(人)の心を強く捉える、魅了する、とりこにする」の意味があります。
he had managed to get under my skin—I couldn’t wait to be with him
(英:OD 日: 英辞郎 on the web)

In reality, as opposed to superficial appearances"と定義されており、以下のように用います。

He still believes that all women are goddesses under the skin

(Dew)

32 aging stone lanterns near Ise Jingu to be removed over safety concerns

TSU--Thirty-two stone lanterns that have lined the road near the Ise Jingu shrine for almost half a century are to be removed for fear that they may fall over during the Group of Seven summit to be held nearby.

The lanterns in question wobble when touched so safety concerns have sparked the Mie prefectural government into action.

“It would become a big deal if they fell over during the Ise-Shima summit to be held in May,” a government official said.

The 32 are among 418 stone lanterns standing along the Miyuki road which connects the Naiku inner shrine and the Geku outer shrine of Ise Jingu in Ise, according to the prefectural government.

この単語をLDOCEで調べてみると、“to move unsteadily from side to side, or make something do this”という定義が見つかりました。

(ninetails)

Harry Potter’ author reveals Japanese wizarding school

The author of the “Harry Potter” series, J.K. Rowling, let muggles in on a big secret — there is a hidden wizarding school in Japan.

Rowling revealed the Japanese version of Hogwarts on her Pottermore website, along with ⤢schools in the U.S., Brazil and Africa. In the “Harry Potteruniverse, there are 11 institutions worldwide where young wizards and witches learn how to use magic.

Rowling even alludes to Japan’s Self-Defense Forces by writing that Quidditch players have to careful when flying because of “planes from the muggle airbase on a neighboring island.”

blackhole

Space development program a blackhole for public funds

Last Nov. 24, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. successfully launched an H-IIA F-29 rocket carrying a Canadian communications satellite, marking Japan’s first entry into the commercial satellite market.

More good space-related news came on Dec. 11, when astronaut Kimiya Yui of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) returned from a five-month stay on the International Space Station (ISS).
Although these developments led many to dream of a bright future for Japan’s space program, an insider in the governing Liberal Democratic Party is more cautious. He says Japan’s space development is in fact a “public works project disguised as science and technology,” and that the future of Japanese-made rockets is by no means bright.

Indeed, Mitsubishi’s space business has been chronically in the red, and due to fierce pricing competition worldwide the November launch may well become the first and last launch of a commercial satellite for Mitsubishi.

(Kawada)

“unicorns”

Corralling billion-dollar 'unicorns'

A few years back, yet-to-be-listed tech startups valued at $1 billion or more were so rare they were dubbed "unicorns" in the U.S., after the mythical creatures. Now these pricey startups are becoming more and more common.

ft.com/lexiconによりますと,“So-called unicorns are private companies valued at more than $1bn.” (Kawada)

paedophile

Screen Actors Guild awards: 'Diversity reigns' in ceremony

The journalism drama Spotlight took home the main prize at the Screen Actors Guild awards, but the success of minority actors drew most attention.
The film, about the Boston Globe's investigation of paedophile Catholic priests, won for best film cast.
But many of the main awards in Los Angeles were won by actors of diverse backgrounds, with industry magazine Variety noting that "diversity reigns".
It comes amid controversy over a lack of diversity among Oscar nominees.

Oxford Dictionaries.comには"A person who is sexually attracted to children"と定義されております。(Ume)
