enamored

WASHINGTON — Timothy D. Cook, the chief executive of Apple, was relentless during a private meeting of tech giants and President Obama’s top national security officials last month. Encrypted devices like the iPhone are here to stay, he insisted. Law enforcement needs to find a way to do its job in a new world.

Either way, what started as a cordial two-hour discussion about combating Islamic extremism ended with the White House and Mr. Cook agreeing to disagree — foreshadowing a bitter battle between a president long enamored of Apple products and Silicon Valley and a tech titan who has spoken enthusiastically of Mr. Obama.

まず,意味を確認してみると,Dictionary.comには,“to fill or inflame with love (usually used in the passive and followed by of or sometimes with)”と記載されていました。

(Nao)

"purr-fect" #2

Shikoku’s Cat Island finds purr-fect solution to food crisis

An army of cats ruling a remote island in Shikoku are licking their whiskers after a plea for food aid triggered a flood of donations from across the country.

More than 140 cats occupy the tiny island of Aoshima in Ehime Prefecture — outnumbering humans 8 to 1. But when the feral felines recently ran out of cat food, a cry for help led to an extraordinary response.

まず“purr”をLDOCEで調べてみると、“if a cat purrs, it makes a soft low sound in its throat to show that it is pleased”と定義されており、日本語で「(猫の)ゴロゴロという声」を意味していると分かります。 (ninetails)

In a surprise, Sharp accepts rescue deal but Hon Hai does not
Japan Inc. appeared to be losing one of its crown jewels Thursday after troubled electronics giant Sharp accepted a rescue package from Hon Hai of Taiwan, turning down a bid from a government-backed consortium.

『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』第5版(学研教育出版)では,第一語義は「[~s](儀式で国王が身につける)宝石類(→王冠・王笏など)」(“the crown, sword, jewels etc worn by a king or queen for official ceremonies”— LDOCE5),第二語義は「(一般的に)至宝;[通例~s]⦅ビジネス⦆(企業の)最有力資産(買収側にとって最も魅力的な事業部門」(“the best or most valuable thing that a person or place has”— LDOCE5)とあります。 (Kawada)

aim a dig at

『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』(三省堂)によると"have, make, take a dig at"で「≪… Oxford Dictionariesでも"have a dig at"の"A remark intended to mock or criticize"という定義のみが示されておりました。ただ,WordReference.comのサイトに投稿された,"Hi there ? What "aim dig" in the following context ? I understand the idea but can t translate it." To aim (more typically, take) a dig at someone means to make a negative comment about that person. (meterse con alguien)"という回答があり,"aim a dig at"は,"take a dig at"と同じような意味で使えるようです。(Ume)

South Carolina primary: Huge win for Clinton over Sanders

On the Republican side, billionaire Donald Trump leads a field that has dwindled to five from 12 a month ago.
He won the Nevada caucus on Wednesday by a wide margin - correspondents say he is beginning to look unstoppable.
In her victory speech, Mrs Clinton aimed a dig at the man tipped to be the Republican presidential candidate.
"Despite what you hear, we don't need to make America great again. America has never stopped being great," she said, referencing Mr Trump's campaign slogan.
