5 years after earthquake and tsunami, lost keepsakes await return to owners
NAMIE, Fukushima -- In this town near the Fukushima nuclear plant is a room filled with the somber miscellany of the aftermath of a disaster: toys, photos, Buddhist mortuary tablets -- all things lost in the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, and all awaiting to be reunited with their owners some five years later.
Namie, Fukushima Prefecture, was hit hard by the March 2011 tsunami, and remains vacated due to the Fukushima nuclear crisis. Serious work to clear the rubble left by the disaster began only in July 2014, and the personal belongings uncovered have been put on display at the town's "Omoide no shina tenjijo," or "keepsakes exhibit hall." The hall, operated by cleanup contractor Hazama Ando Corp., opened in July 2014 in a former gift shop along National Route 6.

第８８回アカデミー賞の授賞式が２８日（日本時間２９日）に行われました。新聞記者たちがカトリック教会のスキャンダルをスクープする過程を描いた「スポットライト 世紀のスクープ」が、アカデミー賞の最高峰である作品賞を受賞したほか、脚本賞にも選ばれたそうです。

"snatch"を取り上げます。「ひったくる」「誘拐する」という意味がありますが、ここでは意味がとれなかったので調べてみました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「(勝利などを)危ういところでつかむ」という意味がありました。LDOCEで調べてみると、このような定義は記載がありませんでしたが、類義語として出ていた"grab"では"to take an opportunity, accept an invitation etc immediately"とありました。
今回"snatch"が使われた背景には1月に行われたゴールデングローブ賞で『レヴェナント：蘇えりし者』が作品賞、主演男優賞、監督賞の3部門を受賞しており、今回も受賞の可能性はありましたが、主演男優賞、監督賞にとどまり、『スポットライト』が作品賞を獲得したということでこの表現が使われていることがわかりました。(lua)

If 2016 is the year of the monkey, it surely belongs to its more famous animated cousin, Mankey. Celebrating 20 continuous years is a worthy milestone. Pokemon brought endless riches to those—including your correspondent—who grew up during a Japanese breakout in the 1990s.
Mr Satoshi’s imaginative world toes the line of many modern mythmakers; underpinning the animation is his childhood love of collecting insects, blended with Japan’s technological innovation. Crisp aesthetics spanning climates and pseudo-cultures, and an unlimited universe of creatures, gives Pokémon its distinct character. The catchphrase familiar to children of the 90s—“Gotta catch ‘em all”—encouraged a scientific purpose and an admiration for the unknown in inquisitive children. Pokémon is a Darwinian tale of observation, collection and recording with Buddhist mind-set, featuring a protagonist sporting denim jeans with a sense of adventure akin to a wandering Sufi. With the exception of Star Wars, no multinational saga on the small or big screen comes close to this level of spirituality.

『クラウン英語イディオム辞典』（三省堂）には，toe the [a] line [mark, scratch, crack, trig] /｟米・まれ｠toe the chalkという形で「（党・集団の）規律[方針，命令，規制，政綱]にきちんと従う」（“to do what other people in a job or organization say you should do, whether you agree with them or not”— LDOCE5）とあります。『スポーツからきた英語表現辞典』（大修館書店）には，出所が2説記載があり，1つはInahoさんが書いているように，「レースのスタートラインに片足のつま先を置く」，もう1つはボクシングからの表現で，「19世紀の試合で行われたように，試合開始時（またはノックダウンの後）にボクサーが所定の位置に立つ。toe the markとも言う」という説でした。
The Phrase Finderでは，3説あました。「徒競走から来た」という説，「国会で争いが起きないように引かれた線から」という説，「ボクシング（toe-to-toe bout）から来た」という説，「船の上で処刑する際に看板の方へ縦一列に並ばせる」という説の3つです。同サイトによりますと，toe the …という表現が最初に登場したのは1813からでした。ですが，まだはっきりした証拠はつかめていないということです。この場合は，「神話に基づく」という意味だと考えました。因みに，toe the chalkという表現をインターネット検索に掛けて見ましたら見つからず，COCAにも一度かけて見ましたが，用例を拾うことはできませんでした。もう消滅してしまったのでしょうか。ですが，コーパス的なデータにはなくても，ネイティブが使うことは十分想定可能ですので，今度聴いてみようと考えました。（Kawada）

“early-onset dementia”を拾い上げます。まずは各構成要素から確認していきましょう。
”onset”は“the ~ of something：the beginning of something, especially something bad”と定義されており、手元の辞書で索引すると「1.(通例よくない事の)開始、始まり、着手 2.攻撃、突撃」と確認できます。これに”early”と組み合わせることで「若年性の、早期発症の」という意味合いを持たせています。「初期症状の」といった意味ではないという点に留意しておきましょう。
続いて”dementia”は、de-(reverse, from),men(think, memory) –ia(medical condition)という形態素から成り、英語では“an illness that affects the brain and memory, and makes you gradually lose the ability to think and behave normally”、日本語では「(脳病・脳損傷による)痴呆」とそれぞれ定義されています。本文では、これらを全て組み合わせることで「若年性認知症」を表現しています。なお、各語、形態素の定義が『ジーニアス英和辞典第三版』、LDOCE、English Vocabulary Elementsを参考にしました。(あいづ)

米国コメディアンのChris Rock氏が，オスカー賞の大半を白人が占めていたことに対してジョークを飛ばしました。その内容は，アジア系アメリカ人の子ども3人が，会計士のコスプレをするというものです。アジア人は勤勉で数学が得意であるというステレオタイプを表現したようです。これに対しては，批判の声も上がっております。
記事の中で気になった単語は"skit"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）によると「《…についての》（笑いを誘う）寸劇, スキット; 風刺劇[文]」などという意味がありました。Oxford Dictionaries.comには"A short comedy sketch or piece of humorous writing, especially a parody"と定義されております。Oxford Dictionaries.comによると18世紀初期ごろに使われ始めた用語であると書かれております。（Ume）
Oscars 2016: Host Chris Rock rapped over Asian-American 'joke'
Activists accused him of perpetuating racial stereotypes when he introduced a group of accountants, who turned out to be three Asian children in suits.
Chris Rock has been generally praised for the way he dealt with the absence of black artists among Oscar nominees.
The ceremony had been boycotted by some Hollywood figures.
All 20 nominees in the best acting or supporting acting categories were white.
Chris Rock had addressed the controversy during his hosting of Sunday night's Academy Awards show, commenting that he had "counted at least 15 black people" in the montage that opened the ceremony, before welcoming people to the "white People's Choice awards".
The skit involving the three children was an apparent reference to Asians being good at maths. One of the children was also given a Jewish surname.
Rock then said: "If anybody is upset about that joke, just tweet about it on your phone, which was also made by these kids."
