Japan boy band SMAP to break up
The Japanese boy band, which sold 35m records up to last year, will disband on 31 December, its management agency said on Sunday.
Rumours of a split had been rife since the turn of the year, but had all previously been denied.
Its five members, who are aged between 39 and 43, are now expected to pursue solo careers.
The band, formed in 1988, has built up a huge fanbase in Japan and throughout Asia with members appearing frequently in films, soap operas, and commercials.

今回取り上げる単語は、fanbaseです。
Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)によると、 “fan base”で“the fans of a sports team, pop group, etc. considered as a distinct social grouping”とのことでした。
『ジーニアス大英和辞典用例プラス対応』（大修館）で調べたところ、「（社会的に目立つ集団としての）ファンクラブ」と定義されておりました。
過去のブログ記事に記述されているように、「ファン層」という意味で捉えることもできます。
いずれにせよ、大勢のファンのことを表しています。
電子辞書で複数検索をかけたのですが、上記の電子辞典以外には記載されておりませんでした。そのため比較的新しい単語なのかなと考え、インターネットで検索してみました。
インターネット辞書サイトのcollinsdictionary、そしてGoogleの “fanbase”の使用頻度のグラフから、2000年頃から急激に使われるようになった単語であることが分かります。
