Sixties Scoop survivors recall painful memories in Ontario

About 200 Aboriginal people gathered in Toronto on Tuesday to speak out against the Sixties Scoop in Ontario, a period of nearly 20 years starting in the 1960s in which Aboriginal children were placed with non-Native families.
The Sixties Scoop survivors demonstrated outside a courthouse in downtown Toronto early Tuesday before a hearing on a class action lawsuit against the practice got underway.
Lawyers for the plaintiffs are calling for a summary judgment in the legal battle that began seven years ago. A hearing on the matter was adjourned and will resume Dec. 1st unless the federal government reaches a settlement with Sixties Scoop survivors in Ontario first.

今回取り上げるのはthe Sixties Scoop in Ontarioです。

「アボリジニ」といえば、オーストラリアの先住民族を想像しがちですが、『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）でaborigineを引くとオーストラリアのみならず「先住民、土着民」の意味があり、カナダの憲法ではファースト・ネーションズ、メティス、イヌイットの三つのグループに分けられた民族が存在します。

カナダの歴史を調べてみますと、オーストラリアでも起きたように、1874年から「先住民族の文化は劣るもの」とし、先住民族の子供たちを強制的に教会の運営する寄宿学校に入学させるという行為が行われていたことがわかりました。また、1940年代には6000人の子供たちが虐待によって亡くなったとされ、「文化的ジェノサイド」と非難されています。

その中でも、1960年代から1980年代の終わりにかけて先住民族の子供たちが親元から連れ去られ、白人の家庭の養子にされるということが起こりました。

LDOCEのscoopの動詞のところに“to pick something up or remove it using a scoop or a spoon, or your curved hand”という「すくう」の意味があることから、the Sixties Scoop in Ontarioで「60年代にオンタリオで起きた独自の文化とアイデンティティの喪失」、「家族からの引き離し」を表しているのではないかと思いました。(flyingbird)
