Study seeks to discover if rice could hold key to cure for hay fever

Health fanatics who shun carbohydrates as the root of all evil may soon have to change their diets, especially if they suffer from hay fever.

The Osaka Prefectural Medical Center for Respiratory and Allergic Diseases here announced that it will start in November a research project to cure hay fever by feeding subjects special rice grains containing chemical components of cedar pollen, the top source of pollen allergies in Japan.

If the project is successful, those who are tired of tearing up and suffering sneezing fits every spring may just have to eat rice for relief.

“The method allows the body to inhibit only the increase of immune cells that cause harm and may become a fundamental treatment of hay fever,” said Toshio Tanaka, a professor of immunology at Osaka University who is part of the project.

Statistics suggest that one in every four Japanese suffer from cedar pollen allergies.

However, there are no established cures for hay fever. Patients can hold in their mouths small amounts of allergens contained in cedar pollen or be injected with it to reduce allergic reactions, but it is a lengthy process that can take three to five years.

The upcoming clinical study takes its cue from the same basic principle, but aims to make the process easier by turning daily meals into part of the treatment.

今回取り上げる表現は “takes its cue from” です。『ライトハウス英和辞典』(第5版 研究社)でcueの項目を調べますと、 “take a one’s cue from…” で「…を模範とする、…の手本にならう」という意味であることがわかりました。LDOCEには “to use someone else’s actions or behaviour to show you what you should do or how you should behave” と定義されております。“to show you what you should do” という部分から、誰かの行動が自分のすべきことを示す道しるべになるというようなイメージがわきました。
