日本英語教育史学会 感想
一昨日，T大学で行われた日本英語教育史学会に参加しました。
今回の学会は2部にわたって行われました。まず前半に「発音学者としての岡倉由三郎」について，後半には武信由太郎と武信の人生に大きな影響を与えた人々についてまとめられた著書『武信由太郎伝』について著者の森悟先生，ご本人からお話を拝聴しました。
正直なところ，発表のテーマであった2人について名前しか存じ上げていなかったので，生き方や教育理念などの人物像を詳しく知ることができ，非常に勉強になりました。特に印象に残ったのは，武信由太郎が言ったとされる「特別，英語を勉強していない。ただ英文を読み，英文を書くだけだ。」ということばでした。英語を学習することは何か特別なことだと思いがちですが，毎日コツコツと英語に触れることは全く特別なことではなく，英語学習者であれば当然なことであると改めて気づかされ，今まさに英語を学んでいる私の英語への向き合い方が大きく変わりました。今回のご著書のように，日本英語教育史の重要人物についての伝記を編みなおしたものに触れることで，その人物を知らない世代の学習者であっても，その人物の生き方から自分を見つめなおす機会にもなるので，今回有意義な時間を過ごせたと思います。
最後に，このような素晴らしい機会を与えてくださったUG先生，学会関係者の皆様，本当にありがとうございました。(ninetails)

今回取り上げる表現はpalate /ˈpælət/ です。以前英検プリントでも出てきましたが、『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）には「1（the〜）（解剖）口蓋（こうがい） the hard（soft） palate 硬（軟）口蓋 2（普通は単数形で）（格式）味覚（for）」とありました。LDOCEには “the roof (=top inside part) of your mouth” や “the sense of taste, and especially your ability to enjoy or judge food” と定義されております。
今回は “a palate” と単数形になっており、「味覚」の意味で用いられています。
ヒトはショ糖（砂糖）や果物などに含まれる果糖を最も甘いと感じ、麦芽糖にはあまり甘さを感じませんが、ニホンザルは麦芽糖の甘みをショ糖と同じくらいの強さで感じることができるそうです。
