昨日、ゼミの中で出てきた表現を取り上げます。その表現は，“lord it over”です。これは，先生の大学時代には，この程度のレベルだったという翻訳問題に出てきました。
ここでの“lord”は，一般的に知られている名詞ではなく，動詞として用いられています。動詞を見る前に，名詞から確認していきます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（大修館書店）を確認すると，「貴族」や「卿」，「神」など様々な意味があります。
次に，ここで使われている動詞を見ていきます。同上の辞書には，“lord it over”で「〈人〉に殿様顔する」や「威張り散らす」と定義されていました。例文には，“lord it over one’s wife”「妻に偉そうな顔をする」とあります。体育会の上下関係を想像すると，意味を連想しやすいかもしれませんね。
さらにCambridge Dictionaryを引いてみると，“to behave as if you are more important than someone and have a right to tell that person what to do”と記載されていました。あたかも他より価値があり，指示できるような振る舞いという意味から，上記のような日本語になるようですね。(Nao)

今回取り上げる表現は “voice-activated” です。
はじめに手持ちの英和辞典で引いたところ, 今回の表現は直接記載がありませんでした。
続いてDictionary.comで確認すると, “(of a telephone answering machine or other device) operationally responsive to a human voice” と定義されていました。
つまり今回は, 音声を認知する機能を備えた掃除機であることを “voice-activated” と表現していると考えられます。(Cayu)

『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版(大修館)で調べてみると、「合間、しばらくの間、暫時」の他に「仮協定(決定)」とあり、形容詞では、「中間の、当座の、決算期前の」とありました。
LDOCEでは、"intended to be used or accepted for a short time only, until something or someone final can be made or found"と表現されていました。

今回取り上げるのは、見出しにある“heirloom” /éərlùːm/です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「(先祖代々からの)財産[宝]」とありました。
LDOCEでは、“a valuable object that has been owned by a family for many years and that is passed from the older members to the younger members”と定義されています。
“heirloom”は“heir”と“loom”の２つに分けることができます。“heir”には「相続人」という意味があります。一方で、“loom”という名詞には「織機、機」という意味があります。この“loom”はこの意味だと一見関係なさそうですが、古くは「道具」という意味で用いられたそうです。これら２つの単語が組み合わさり、今回の表現が成り立っています。(Blue Sky)

“stable”を取りあげます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると名詞形で「馬小屋」という意味もありますが、「(プロの選手育成用)訓練施設(部屋)」で相撲部屋にも使われることがわかりました。
語源はラテン語でじっと立って(st)いられる(able)という意味があるようです。
例として九重部屋はKokonoe Stableとあり、Stableはsを大文字にすることがわかりましたが、記事では小文字だったので、少し気になりました。(lua)

トランプ大統領がTPP離脱の大統領令に署名しました。昨年の2月に日米など12カ国で署名された内容は、米国の参加を前提に作成されていたのでこれで発効の見通しが立たなくなりました。安倍首相は今月の23日に「TPPの持つ意義を米国に理解してもらいたい」と表明したばかりでした。
取り上げる表現は"linchpin"です。すでに取り上げられていますが、「くさび、欠かせないもの、要」という意味があります (『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版 )。Word Reference com には"a pin placed transversely through an axle to keep a wheel in position a person or thing regarded as an essential or coordinating element"と定義されていました。以上から物と人の両方に使われる単語であることがわかります。この記事ではオバマ前大統領の要の政策であったと訳せると思いました。(Mt.Fuji)

英検感想
大変遅れて申し訳ありません。
私もこの日曜日に英検を受けました。受け終わって，感じたことは様々ありますが，中でも二つ強く感じたことがあります。復習と演習量です。
復習では，数多くの英検プリントをやった表現が出てきたにも関わらず，意味が思い出せなかったことが多かったです。普段やっているプリントをそのままにしてしまった結果が今回のテストで出てきたと思います。
次に，演習量ですが，まだまだ勉強が足りていないと実感しました。勉強した部分は，以前より出来ましたが，勉強不足の箇所は，あまり伸びていませんでした。自分の気持ちの弱さが露呈したかと思います。これらの反省を生かして，勉学に励んでいきたいと思います。(Nao)

今回気になったのはlymphoma /lim-ˈfō-mə/ です。
“lymph”が含まれていることから、「リンパ」に関する言葉であることがわかります。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）では医学用語で「リンパ種」とありました。
よって“brain lymphoma”で「脳リンパ種」となります。
Oxford Living Dictionariesでは“Cancer of the lymph nodes”と定義されていました。
ネットで“-oma”を調べると、ギリシャ語で“morbid growth, tumor”を表す時に用いられることが分かり、『英辞郎 on the web』で「脳腫瘍」を調べると医学用語で“encephaloma”という単語が載っていました。
松方さんは脳リンパ種を患っていることが判明した、昨年3月から治療に専念していたそうです。(flyingbird)
