Geiko and maiko entertain customers on a terrace that opened Monday beside the Kamogawa river in Kyoto. Diners can enjoy a cool evening breeze while feasting on local cuisine on restaurant terraces that have opened for the season along Kyoto’s main river. Eighty-nine restaurants have started serving customers on a stretch of terraces about two kilometers long. The terraces are set to remain until the end of September.

　見出しにあるtoast /toʊst/ を取り上げます。この単語を見るとまず浮かぶのがパンのトーストですが、ここでのtoastはそれとは異なります。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、名詞では「1乾杯（to）　2（the〜）（地域の）賞賛の的になる人（物）、人気の的（of）」、動詞では「（…）のために祝杯をあげる、乾杯する」とありました。「乾杯！」という声かけをする際、 “Cheers!” の他にも “To your health!” “To our happiness!” とも言うようです。

　LDOCEには “if you drink a toast to someone, you drink something in order to thank them, wish them luck etc” や “to drink a glass of wine etc to thank someone, wish someone luck, or celebrate something” などと定義されています。

　どうしてtoastに乾杯という意味の要素が加わったのか疑問に思いましたが、語源の項目に「昔ワインに香料入りのトーストをひと切れ入れて飲む習慣があり、祝杯を受ける人もまた、そのワインに風味を添えるものだと考えられていたので」と載っており（『ライトハウス英和辞典』）、ワインとトーストを同時に楽しむという習慣が関係していることがわかりました。（aqua）
