朝ゼミで言及された面白い表現を取り上げます。

A few months ago, McDonald’s U.S. decided to throw logic out the window by inventing a french fry fork, dubbed the FRORK. Comprising a silicone fork with a hole where the prongs should be, the utensil lets consumers insert three french fries to create their very own edible fork.
Commercials claim that the FRORK is the perfect tool to wipe up any sauce spilled from burgers, which we have to say is a bit of a stretch. Other than being a novelty item, it’s hard to imagine it has any other use besides edible entertainment and/or forking frustration.

throw logic out the windowは直訳すると「窓の外に論理を追い出す、投げる」となりますが、インターネットによると「筋の通った判断を捨てる」と記載されていました。つまり、UG先生が教えてくださったように「常識を覆す」という訳になります。また『ジーニアス英和辞典』を引くとout (of) the windowで「無用な、捨てさるべき」とありました。他にも動詞の使い分けで様々な意味になるのではないかと思い調べると、go out (of) the windowとjump out (of) the windowが載っていました。前者は“if a quality, principle, or idea goes out of the window, it does not exist any more”と定義されていました。後者はそのままの意味で「窓の外に飛び降りる」を意味しますが、“when you confess your love to someone, you think I’m ready to jump out the window”といったようにふざけて使われることもあるようです。またofはしばしば省略されるようです。
アメリカのマクドナルドがフレンチフライでフォークに見立てたFRORKを提供するという記事でしたが、動画を見た感じではただ一瞬だけネタとなってすぐに人気は無くなってしまうと思いました。しかしアメリカらしい面白い発想であるとも思います。(Kiwi girl)

取り上げる単語は"disarmament"です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）で調べてみると、「武装解除、（特に核）軍備縮小、軍備制限（撤廃）」とありました。「否定」の意味を表す"dis"と、「武装する」という意味の"arm"が含まれているので、予測しやすいと思います。LDOCEでは"when a country reduces the number of weapons it has, or the size of its army, navy etc"と定義されています。今回の総会は、軍縮会議であったことが分かります。(Akim)

rank-and-file / ræŋk ənd fīl / を取り上げます。表記より, ある「ひとまとまり」を示しているのではないかと予想し, 『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で調べると, 「(組織・団体の)平の構成員」「一般の人」とありました。もとは「(将校でない)兵隊」を指し, この場合は通例 “the-” が付きます。Merriam-Webster.comには “the individuals who constitute the body of an organization, society, or nation as distinguished from the leaders” と定義されていました。さらに “rank” と “file” についてそれぞれ確認したところ, 軍事用語で前者は「横列」, 後者は「縦列」また「伍」を表すとのことから, 上記のような意味になったと考えられます(同英和辞典)。(Cayu)

AKBの総選挙の投票権を抜いて585枚ものCDを山に不法投棄したとされる男性が書類送検されました。

DAZAIFU, Fukuoka Prefecture--A bumbling fan of AKB48 has admitted to dumping hundreds of CDs here following a cross-country plot to sway the annual popularity contest of the all-female idol group, police said Oct. 16.
Fukuoka prefectural police said the fan, a 32-year-old company employee living here, had his case sent to prosecutors on suspicion of illegally discarding 585 CD singles of the group in a mountainous area of Dazaifu in June.

“bumbling”を取りあげます。“bumble”といえば「もぐもぐと何か言う」（mumble？）やハチのブンブン飛ぶ音が浮かびましたが（buzz？）、LDOCEで確認すると“behaving in a careless way and making a lot of mistakes”とありました。日本語で「ドジな、うっかり」となります（blooper）。
投棄された段ボールにはCDを送ってきた友人の住所が記載されたままで、そこから犯人特定につながったそうです。(flying bird)

According to police, the suspect only wanted the serial numbers printed on each of the CDs. Those numbers are used by fans to vote for their favorite members of the group, a contest that has turned into a major event in recent years. The results of the vote determine which members are allowed to sing the main single of the next CD.

bumble /bˈʌmbl/ を取り上げます。fansが後ろにくることから、熱狂的なという意味かと思いましたが、外れました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）には「1もぐもぐ言う、しどろもどろに話す 2もたもたする、よろよろする」とありました。しかし、これらの意味ではしっくりときません。他の意味はないかと電子辞書の『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第4版 大修館書店）でも引いてみると、「しくじる、台無しにする」とあり、「へまをする」ととらえるとうまくいくのではないかと思います。
LDOCEには “to speak in a confused way, so that no one can understand you” や “to move in an unsteady way” と定義されています。
男性は585枚ものCDを不法投棄し、CDの入った段ボール箱の数は11箱にものぼったそうです。（aqua）

昨日の朝ゼミで読んだ記事から、おさらいです。

Cayuさんが三日ほど前に取り上げたstretchは「追い込み」という意味でしたが，この記事では他の意味で用いられています。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、たくさん意味があるなかで「拡大解釈する；（信用などを）悪用する；誇張する」などが載っておりました。Oxford Dictionary of English (2th)にも、"adapt or extend the scoop of (something) in a way that exceeds a reasonable or acceptable limit"との定義がありました。文中では “a bit of a stretch”と書かれているため、「少し盛っている」のような意味合いになります。
話がそれますが、他に「誇張する」を表す単語や表現を調べたところ、なかでも pile it onという表現は「盛る」と同じようなイメージだなと思いました。(Gomez)
broth 復習
本日も先生に教えていただいた表現を取り上げたいと思います。昨日、おでんの話になった際に、おでんのスープは“broth”/brˈɔːθ/で表現すると教えていただきました。確認のために『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いてみたところ、「(肉・野菜・米・魚などの)スープ、煮出し汁」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“soup with meat, rice, or vegetables”と定義されています。要するに、食材を煮出してとっただし汁、スープ全般を“broth”で表現することができるようです。
またToo many cooks spoil the broth.「コックが多すぎるとスープが台無しになる」ということわざにもこのbrothが用いられています。日本語のことわざでは「船頭多くして船山にのぼる」に相当します。(Blue Sky)
