Koike resigns as leader of Hope party to focus on being governor

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike speaks to reporters about the election of Yuichiro Tamaki as co-leader of Kibo no To (Hope) on Nov. 10. (Shuhei Nomura)

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike announced her resignation as leader of Kibo no To (Hope), the national party formed amid high expectations that ended up failing in the Lower House election.

Her decision was announced at a meeting of the party’s Diet members on Nov. 14.

After stepping down, Koike is expected to concentrate on her duties as governor of the capital.

However, Koike soon came under criticism for weeding out liberal-minded members of the Democratic Party who wanted to run on the Hope ticket.

LDOCEには “weed somebody/something out” の形で “to get rid of people or things that are not very good” と定義されています。
