soapboxに注目します。石けん箱を指しますが、ここでは違う意味で使われているようです。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）を引いたところ、「即席の街頭演説台」や「（比ゆ的に）意見発表の場」などと載っておりました。Oxford Dictionary of English (2th) では、 “used with reference to a situation in which someone expresses strong opinions about a particular subject”と説明されております。
なぜsoapboxが上記の意味になるのか不思議に思っていたところ、『新英和大辞典』（第六版，研究社）に、「（石けん箱を演台にして）スピーチを行う」という記述を見つけました。勝手に小さい箱を想像していましたが、大きな石けん箱がもとのようです。 (Gomez)
