トランプ米大統領は前首席戦略官兼上級顧問のスティーブン・バノン氏を「正気を失った」と強く非難しました。

unpatriotic /ʌnpeɪtriάṭɪk/ を取り上げます。patrioticで「〈人・言動などが〉愛国的な、愛国心の強い」となるのはお馴染みかもしれませんが否定の接頭辞un-によって「非愛国的な、愛国心のない」を意味します。『ジーニアス英和辞典』また手持ちの辞書によると、若い世代を中心に/pèi/と発音する人が増えていると記載されていました。
さらにpatrioticの語源を調べると、ラテン語とギリシャ語のpater（＝a father）「父」からきていることがわかりました。
LDOCEでは“not supporting your country”と定義されています。
つまり上記ではポール議長がtreasonous「反逆の」、unpatriotic 「非愛国的な」であることが読み取れます。(Kiwi girl)
hangnail 復習
辞書を見ながら面白い表現はないかと探していたところ、この時期にはよく悩まされるhangnailに目が止まりました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）には「（つめの生え際の）ささくれ、さかむけ」とありました。LDOCEには “a piece of skin that has become loose near the bottom of your fingernail” と定義されています。
ちなみに、同じささくれでも物によっては違う言い方をするようです。『プログレッシブ和英中辞典』（第3版 小学館）でささくれを引くと、上記の他に「（木や竹の先の） a fine split」とあり、動詞では「裂ける」という意味を表すsplitを用いることがわかりました。
ささくれの原因は水仕事や乾燥が主なものだと思っていましたが、ネイルも一要因となっているそうです。ネイルを落とす除光液にはアセトンが含まれており、この物質は油分を吸い取る作用があるとのことです。日々の予防には、クリームを塗る意外にも、健康な皮膚を作る食事などにも気をつける必要があるなと思いました。（aqua）

Bosses of top British companies will have made more money by lunchtime on Thursday than the average UK worker will earn in the entire year, according to an independent analysis of the vast gap in pay between chief executives and everyone else.

今回取り上げる表現は、a roof over one’s head です。意味のイメージはつくかもしれませんが、この表現は比喩を用いています。"a roof over one’s head” を直訳すれば「頭上の屋根」になります。
Cambridge Dictionary で確認すると、“a place to live” とあり、「すみか」を指すことがわかります。同書に例文があり、“She gave him enough money to get a roof over his head.” となっています。

気になった語は slope / sləʊp / です。「スロープ」というと人工的な坂として認識していましたが, 『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で確認したところ, 複数形で「傾斜地, 絶壁」, また「丘陵地帯」とありました。
本文では “on the slopes of Mount Fuji” と表現されており, 「(富士)裾野」を表すフレーズとして適していると考えられます。続いてMerriam-Webster.comには “ground that slants downward or upward” と定義され, “ground that slopes” という用例が挙げられていました。

180-year-old doll performs 2018's first calligraphy ritual 'kakizome'
KURUME, Fukuoka Prefecture--A 180-year-old wind-up doll in kimono performed the “kakizome” ritual Jan. 2--the first calligraphy writing of the new year.
The male doll, its face painted white and with a sword tucked into its obi, was produced by Hisashige Tanaka (1799-1881), an inventor known as the “Thomas Edison of the East” who lived in Kurume.
The doll was cheered by a crowd each time it finished writing a kanji character.

“winter”を取り上げます。「冬」という意味を持つ単語であることは誰しも知っている単語だと思います。この単語が動詞として使われると、「«場所で»冬を過ごす(over)«in»」という意味になります(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。確認のためにLDOCEも引いたところ、“to spend the winter somewhere”と定義されていました。他の季節を表す単語にも動詞としての意味があるので、興味がありましたら調べてみてください。ちなみに、「冬眠」を“winter”で表現することができるのではないかと思ったのですが、「冬眠する」は“hibernate”というまた違う表現がありました。(Blue Sky)

hunker downを取りあげます。Merriam-Websterで“to stay in a place for a period of time”と定義されているように「（困難な事態が終わるのを）沈黙して待つ、身をひそめる」となります。hunkerはアメリカ英語で「しゃがむ」を表し、名詞のhunk/hˈʌŋk/は「肉などの厚切り、マッチョ」を表します（『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）。
「猫背」を意味するhunchback/hʌ́ntʃbæ̀k/のhunch/hˈʌntʃ/（動詞で「背中を丸める」）と少し綴りが似ていると思い、語源を調べてみましたが関係はあまりないようでした。せっかくなので一緒に覚えていきたいです。(flying bird)
