今回の用法に関連し, 1929年にニューヨーク株式市場の大暴落がきっかけで発生した世界恐慌について, “1929 saw the Great Depression.” のように表現できるということを以前, 先生より教わりました。また同英和辞典による “things seen” という原義からも, 歴史的な事象を表す動詞として適するといえるのではないかと思います。(Cayu)

“local arm”を取り上げます。どちらの単語も基本単語ではありますが、この文脈で“arm”はどのような意味になるのでしょうか。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、第7義に「(組織の)部局、部門；(会社の)(海外)支店、出先機関」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“a part of a large group that is responsible for a particular type of activity”と定義されています。これらの定義から、この記事での“local arm”はバンコクのユニクロ支社という意味になるのではないかと思います。
ちなみに、表現とは関係ないのですが、「ロードサイド店舗」がどういったものか分からなかったので、インターネットで検索してみました。「weblio辞書」によると、「幹線道路など通行量の多い道路の沿線において、自家用車・オートバイ・自転車でのアクセスが主たる集客方法である店舗のこと」と説明がありました。画像で見るとより一目瞭然なので、気になる方は「ロードサイド店舗」で検索してみてください。(Blue Sky)

今回取り上げる語は、luminary / lúːmənèri / です。「ルミネ」は東日本旅客鉄道の連結子会社で東日本各地で展開されています。また西日本では震災の復興を祈る光のページェント 「神戸ルミネリア」を思い出します。まず意味を確認します。LDOCEをみると、”someone who is very famous or highly respected for their skill at doing something or their knowledge of a particular subject” 、OEDをみると、”A person who inspires or influences others, especially one prominent in a particular sphere.” と定義されています。また、『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館)をみると、「(1)照明灯、[文]発光体<太陽・月>、(2)権威、指導的人物、きら星」とありました。
次に語源を確認します。OEDをみると、”Late Middle English: from Old French luminarie or late Latin luminarium, from Latin lumen, lumin- ‘light’.” とありました。(OkaUchi)

decimal /désəm(ə)l/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』で調べると「少数;少数を含む数字」「少数の、10進法の」とあります。語源はラテン語のdecem(=ten)からきていますが、上記では「少数の」の意味で用いられています。
またdec-は「10」を表し、他にもdecade「10年間」、decagon「10角形」などがあります。ぶどう酒入れであるdecanterも何か関係があるか調べてみましたがこちらは接頭辞de-（〜から）からきているため関係なさそうです。
decimal point「小数点」 、decimal system「10進法」などの語句も一緒に抑えておきたいです。欧米の大学や高校で使われているGPAはほとんどの国で導入されているものだと思っていたけれど予想外で驚きました。(Kiwi girl)

frugality /ˈfruːɡ(ə)li/ が気になったので調べてみました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）を引いたところ、frugal で「〈生活ぶりが〉つましい」、「〈人が〉［金・時間などを］倹約する」と載っておりました。Oxford Dictionary of English (2th) 、 “sparing or economical as regards money or food”と定義されております。
上記英和辞典によると、倹約に当てはまる英語は沢山ありますが、frugal はthrifty (「質素な，倹約する」)よりも強意的とのことです。さらにthrift はプラスなイメージですが、stingyはマイナスなイメージとの説明も載っておりました。
語源はラテン語のfrugalisで、さらに元をたどると “economical, thrifty”を指すfrugiだそうです。さらにfrugは “fruit”の意だそうです。(Gomez)
