1st-graders bear main brunt of fatal traffic accidents

First-grade elementary school students were eight times more likely to be killed in traffic accidents while walking than sixth-graders in 2013-2017 in Japan, the National Police Agency said in a survey report on Thursday.

Of 84 elementary school children who were killed in traffic accidents while walking in the five-year period, 32 were first-graders and four were six-graders, the agency said.

Looking at the number of pedestrian victims of fatal or injurious traffic accidents per 100,000 population, 7-year-olds, or first- and second-graders, accounted for the biggest chunk among all age brackets. Many 7-year-olds met with accidents between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., when a lot of children are on their way home from school.

　見出しにあるbear brunt ofを取り上げます。bruntは/brˈʌnt/ と発音されます。交通事故の被害に遭う様子を表していると思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると”bear （take）the brunt of” の形で「（攻撃など）の矢面に立つ」とありました。

　LDOCEには “to receive the worst part of an attack, criticism, bad situation etc” と定義されています。

　bruntだけでは「ほこ先」という意味があり、bearやtakeという動詞はそれを自分の身に受ける様子を表していると考えられます。標的になるという言葉でも言い表すことができるかと思いました。（aqua）
