peremptory 復習

The minivan is passing through a scene that typifies urban decay, Baltimore-style: blocks of modest rowhouses, where some dwellings are inhabited, others are boarded up or abandoned to the elements, and some blocks are entirely vacant, studded with empty lots. …
The reaction in the community was no better. The EBDI’s methods were peremptory: at the outset, in 2002, residents only learned of the imminent destruction of their homes in news reports. (Skip the rest)

 今回取り上げる語は、peremptory /pərém(p)təri/ です。文脈からマイナスの意味で「ひどい」といった意味だと推測しました。以下で意味等を確認していきます。
まず意味を Cambridge Dictionary でみると、“expecting to be obeyed immediately and without asking questions” とあり、LDOCE には “peremptory behaviour, speech etc is not polite or friendly and shows that the person speaking expects to be obeyed immediately” と定義されていました。
次に語源を OED でみると、“Late Middle English (as a legal term): via Anglo-Norman French from Latin peremptorius ‘deadly, decisive’, from perempt- ‘destroyed, cut off’, from the verb perimere, from per- ‘completely’ + emere ‘take, buy’.” とありました。
 以上のことから、peremptory は「横柄な」という意味で非難する気持ちが含まれていることがわかりました。(OkaUchi)
