hijinks/ haɪʤɪnks /を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、hijinksはhigh jinksが省略されたものであることがわかりました。high jinksは「浮かれ騒ぎ、おふざけ」という意味になるそうです。また、LDOCEではnoisy or excited behavior when people are having funと定義されています。highの後にくるjinkの意味が分からなかったので、『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「さっと身をかわす」という意味が載っていました。ちなみに、highときたら対義語のlowが思い出され、low jinksもあるのではないかと思い、インターネットで検索してみました。そうしましたところ、「英辞郎 on the WEB」ではlow jinksで「下品な言動、悪ふざけ」とありました。手元の辞書には載っていなかったので、使用頻度は低いのかもしれません。(Blue Sky)
