phototaxis 復習
今日、UG先生の授業のあいだ、虫が教室の蛍光灯の周りを飛んでいました。この現象の事を「走光性」と教えて頂きました。しかし英語にすることができなかったので調べてみました。
手持ちの紙辞書には載っていなかったので、『weblio 英和辞典・和英辞典』で調べたところ、phototaxisとありました。また、Oxford English Dictionaryには “The bodily movement of a motile organism in response to light, either towards the source of light (positive phototaxis) or away from it” と定義されていました。
続いて成り立ちについて調べました。見ての通りphoto-＋-taxis で成り立っている単語とわかります。なので、それぞれの意味を『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）で調べてみました。
まず、photo-は「光（科学）の；写真の」という意味です。ちなみに、ギリシャ語でlightを意味しています。続いて-taxisは「走性, 配列, 順序」とありました。また『goo 辞書』には「走性, 趨性：外部の刺激に反応して生物が特定の方向へ運動すること」と記載されていました。taxisの定義として “A motion or orientation of a cell, organism, or part in response to an external stimulus.”(OED) とありました。
ちなみに、phototaxisだけでなくchemotaxis「走化性」も同じ意味の単語になります。(amphibian)

取り上げる単語はpoignant /pɔɪnjənt/ です。文脈から、的を射た発言の事ではないかと推測しました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「胸にしみる、心が揺さぶられる、強く印象に残る、辛辣な、鼻をつく」とありました。また、LDOCEでは “making you feel sad or full of pity” と記載されていました。「英・語・源」で調べてみると、ラテン語のpungere(=puncture, stab, to prick)に由来することが分かりました。
「笑い」は人の健康にどのような影響を与えるかという研究が最近行われています。ストレス解消や健康に良いとされていますが、定義が難しく、それに関わる論文も少ないのが現状です。しかしながら、笑う門には福来るという諺にもあるように、笑うということには不思議な力があるのかもしれません。(seventh-dan)

今回取り上げる語は、retrograde /rétrəgrèɪd/ です。見出しにある “What a retrograde moment” は何を指すのでしょうか。この場合の retrograde は形容詞で、retro ＋ grade という語構成であると推測しました。これらに関して、以下で確認していきます。
まず意味を Cambridge Dictionary でみると、“returning to older and worse conditions, methods, ideas, etc.” とあり、LDOCE には “involving a return to an earlier and worse situation” と定義されていました。
次に語源を OED でみると、“Late Middle English (as a term in astronomy): from Latin retrogradus, from retro ‘backwards’ + gradus ‘step’ (from gradi ‘to walk’).” とあります。
以上のことから、retrograde は「(悪い状況・状態に)戻る、退行する、逆行する」という意味を持つことがわかりました。(OkaUchi)

archrival / ɑ́rtʃràɪvəl /を取り上げます。文脈、そしてrivalという単語が隠れていることから「ライバル」という意味であろうと予想しました。しかし、archが付くとどういった意味になるのか知らなかったので、調べてみました。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「最大のライバル」とありました。また、Merriam-Websterでは“a principal rival”と定義されています。接頭辞のarch-には「主な、主要な；最高の、第一の；最高位の、首位の」という意味があります。rivalにこの接頭辞をつけることで、第一のライバル、つまりは「最大のライバル」という意味になっています。(Blue Sky)

idiosyncratic は、ギリシャ語で「その人自身」という意味のある ”idio“ と「(複雑に)絡み合った」というニュアンスを含む ”synkrasys” が組合わさりできた語であるとわかりました。つまり、一つの言葉や単純な言葉で表せないほど、その人の性質がいろんな要素が複雑に絡み合っている様を表す語が idiosyncratic になると推察できます。
今週テキサス州で銃による暴力から人々を守るための州法制定に向けて、学生や保護者、教育者を含めた円卓会議が開催されるそうです。(Happidra)

記事内容に関連することとして、大人になったアイガモはどうなるのか、個人的に気になったためインターネットで調べてみました。このアイガモは成長すると、垂れ下がった稲穂を食べてしまうため、やはり食用肉として処分されるようです。また、飼育が難しく早い時期くら稲穂を食べてしまうため翌年に使い回すこともできないようです。このようにして、スキーマをどんどん増やしていきたいです。（Otoyo）

LDOCEには “if something made of cloth billows, it moves in the wind” や “if a cloud or smoke billows, it rises in a round mass” と定義されています。
語源を調べると、goo辞書には「古ノルド語 bylgja 波」とあり、波を意味する言葉からきていることがわかりました。（aqua）
