paternity harassmentを取り上げます。昨今は様々なハラスメントがありますが、paternity harassmentとはどういったものなのでしょうか。まずpaternityを『ウィズダム英和辞典』で引いてみたところ、「父であること；父権」とありました。主に法律的な用語として用いられる単語であるようです。記事では男性の育休に関して触れられていたので、休暇が取れないといったハラスメントのことを指すのではないかと考えました。確認のためにインターネットで「パタニティーハラスメント」を検索したところ、コトバンクに「育児のための休暇や時短を申し出る男性に対するいやがらせ。」と説明がありました。海外の事情は詳しくありませんが、日本では男性が育休を取るのはまだまだ難しいのかもしれません。
ちなみに、第1パラグラフに出てくるpaternity leaveは「父親の育児休暇、出産サポート休暇」という意味になります。(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。(Blue Sky)

ある海外ファッションブランドのOnline storeを見ていたところ、サイズ表記にわからない単語があったので紹介します。
それはpetite / pətíːt / です。petite, regular, tallの順に載っていたので、「小さいサイズ」という意味を推測しました。
まずOxford English Dictionaryでは “(of a woman) attractively small and dainty” と定義されていました。つまり女性に限定した「小さい」の意味なのでしょうか。
確認するため『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）で調べました。すると「[ほめて]＜女性・その姿が＞小柄で, 小ぎれいな」とありました。
続いて語源を調べてみたところ、フランス語で「小さい」という意味だそうです。

気になった単語はshebang /ʃəˈbæŋ/ です。
文脈から、「全体で見ると」といった意味になると推測しました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「出来事、事件」とありました。また、LDOCEでは “the whole shebang” の形で載っており “the whole thing” と説明がありました。
英辞郎on the webで調べてみると、上記にある意味で使われたのは、1869年にMark Twainが編集者へ宛てた手紙の中での「shebang=家」という連想からであることが分かりました。
ナダル選手は、クレーキングの名に違わぬ圧巻のプレーで優勝を手にしました。この11回目の優勝というのは凄まじい記録で、今後塗り替えられることが考えづらいと感じるほどです。また、表彰式でトロフィーを手にして涙を浮かべる同選手の姿から、物事に挑み続ける心が大切だと教わった気がします。(seventh-dan)

artと聞くとまず思い浮かぶのが芸術や美術ですが、他にも「技術、技芸；こつ、熟練」（『ライトハウス英和辞典』）といった意味があることがわかりました。今回は芸術のartとかけてこの表現が用いられているのだろうと思われます。（aqua）

mercurial 復習
トランプ大統領と金正恩委員長による米朝首脳会談がスタートしました。
“The concept for these discussions is radically different than ever before,” Mr. Pompeo said.
That is largely because of the personal involvement of Mr. Trump and Mr. Kim, both mercurial figures with a penchant for self-promotion and a hunger to be actors on the world stage. It is also because of the progress North Korea has made in the past year with its arsenal, especially the development of a missile that can strike the mainland United States.
“mercurial” /mɚːkjˈʊ(ə)riəl/ に注目しました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館) によると、「変わりやすい、気まぐれな、陽気な、水銀の」といった意味があります。次に『ケンブリッジ英英辞典』をみてみると “changing suddenly and often” あるいは “containing or caused by mercury” と定義され気まぐれで変わりやすい様を表していたり、水銀が含まれるものを形容しているのが窺えます。
mercurial はギリシャ神話に登場する職人・商人・盗賊の守護神である“mercury” (メルクリウス、マーキュリー) が語源とされてることがわかりました。さらに“mercury” は様々な民を救うため毎日飛び回り忙しくしていたことから、“mercury” の様に「切り替えが早い、心移りの速い」と形容する際に “mercurial” と使われる様になったとありました。
今回の会談はアメリカ側が北朝鮮側を「完全かつ検証可能で不可逆な非核化（CVID）」の方向へ持っていけるかどうかが最大の争点と言われています。(Happidra)
soap opera 復習
今日のスピーキングの授業で、相手に意見を求めるときどのような聞き方があるかという話がありました。その中で先生からの「例えばドラマなんかの話だとどう聞く？」という質問の中で、soap operaという単語が出てきたので今回取り上げたいと思います。『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)によりますと、「（テレビ・ラジオの）連続（メロ）ドラマ、（メロドラマに出てくるような）危機的状況、トラブル」とのことです。ちなみに、どうしてsoapという単語が出てくるのかというと、石鹸会社が当時のドラマのスポンサーについていたことからだそうです。
唐突ではありますが、シンガポールにて米朝首脳会談が行われました。今後の展開は現在アメリカにいる身として注視していきたいと思います。（WREN＠Nebraska）

JACET関東支部では下記の要領で関東支部大会を開催致します。『Challenges and Possibilities of Active Learning in English Language Education（英語教育におけるアクティブラーニングの課題と可能性）』をテーマとし、ワークショップや多くの研究発表などが行われます。基調講演には、白水始先生（東京大学高大接続研究開発センター）をお迎えし、大会テーマと同じタイトルのもとでお話しして頂きます。一方、例年とは異なり全体シンポジウムを設けず、その代わりに関東支部企画として大会テーマに基づいたワークショップを５件実施致します。

今回取り上げるのはramp up / rˈæmp ˈʌp / です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版,大修館書店）には「〈商品などが〉増える;急成長する,（生産量の）増加」や「〈商品など〉を増やす,増産する」と記載されていました。また、LDOCEにはto try to persuade people that a company’s shares are worth more than they really areやif a company ramps up an activity, it increases itとありました。
rampには名刺で「スロープ」などという意味があるので、そこを登っていくというようなイメージがあるのかと思います。もちろん反対の意味でramp downもあります。ビジネスでよく使われる表現のようです。(rain)
