tertiary 復習

The OECD estimates the private benefits from tertiary education by gender by country based on various elements, such as costs of tertiary education and the difference in lifetime earnings between individuals who go to universities and those who do not.

今回はtertiary /tˈɚːʃièri/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』で調べると「第3の(third)」とありました。primary, secondary, tertiaryのtertiaryです。

上記のtertiary educationでは「《英》高等教育 (《米》higher education )」と記載がありました。しかし文脈的に「大学教育」を意味していると考えられます。MACMILLAN Dictionaryで確認すると“education at college or university”とありました。イギリスで 高等教育は、高等教育カレッジと大学に分かれていることから今回この表現が使用されたと推測しました。(Kiwi girl)
