skylight /skáɪlàɪt/ を取り上げます。lightが含まれていることから、何かの照明器具かと思いましたが、少し違いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「天窓、明り取り」とありました。空から降ってくる自然の明かりと考えるとイメージが湧きやすいと思いました。

　LDOCEには “a window in the roof of a building” と定義されています。

　lightの項目を見てみると「（普通はthe 〜）日の明かり、日光；昼間、日中」とあり、不可算でtheがつくと人工の電灯ではなく自然のものになることが確認できました。例えば “The light begins to fail at four in the winter.” 「冬は4時には暗くなり始める。」や “Let’s finish while the light lasts.” 「日のあるうちに終わらせよう。」などのように使うことができます。（『ライトハウス英和辞典』）（aqua）
