bum out 復習

Oxford Dictionary of English (2th): “(usu. be bummed out) make (someone) feel upset or disappointed”

Cambridge Dictionary: “US informal to make someone feel sad or disappointed”

“If there’s no gift bag, you get very bummed out” “His plan bums me out”

(ko-chi @ Calgary)

Flu viruses resistant to new drug Xofluza uncovered in Japan

Mutated influenza viruses resistant to baloxavir marboxil, a new flu drug sold as Xofluza, were detected in patients last month, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases has said.

また、LDOCEでは“if an animal or plant mutates, it becomes different from others of the same kind, because of a change in its genetic structure”と定義されています。 (Blue Sky)

Javier Fernandez ended an illustrious figure skating career with his seventh consecutive European title Saturday after Russian rival Mikhail Kolyada floundered in the free skate.
中略
Russia's Alexander Samarin took second with 269.84 after some shaky landings. Italy's Matteo Rizzo stormed from 10th after the short program to third overall with 247.08 for his country's first European men's medal In 10 years.

LDOCEでは“weak and unsteady because of old age, illness, or shock”や“not sure about the exact details of something, or not likely to be completely right”や“not firm or steady”と定義されています。
(rain)

Last year it moved from two-and-a-half minutes before midnight to two minutes, as near as it has ever been to the hour of the apocalypse, largely based on concerns over the possibility of nuclear war with North Korea and “unpredictability” from U.S. President Donald Trump.

また、LDOCEでは “the destruction and end of the world” “a situation in which a lot of people die or suffer, and a lot of damage is done” と定義されています。Oxford Living DictionariesではOld English, via Old French and ecclesiastical Latin from Greek apokalupsis, from apokaluptein ‘uncover, reveal’, from apo- ‘un-’ + kaluptein ‘to cover’.

(seventh-dan)

For the past half-decade, women’s tennis has been a paragon of parity, with one glaring exception. Twelve different women have won at least one grand-slam title since 2014; one of them, Serena Williams, has collected six in that time frame. There, in a nutshell, is the recent history of the sport: a handful of excellent players (Angelique Kerber, Garbiñe Muguruza) and one world-annihilating supernova (Williams) consistently vying for the top prizes.

また、LDOCEでは “someone who is perfect or is extremely brave, good etc – often used humorously” と定義されています。 Mid 16th century: from obsolete French, from Italian paragone ‘touchstone to try good (gold) from bad’, from medieval Greek parakonē ‘whetstone’.

(seventh-dan)

Has it really been 20 years? What stands out when you look back on your journey through snowboarding?

Well, a lot of people don’t realize that there wasn’t a lot of opportunity for women when I was getting started, and wanted to be a professional snowboarder. The most surefire way to make it as a pro snowboarder was through competition. It’s like, “Okay, this is it, I gotta make sure I can perform under pressure – that’s my only chance.”

(KOH)
