feed 復習程度
少し前になりますがNew York Timesの旅行のページに “52Places to Go in 2015”という記事を見つけました。
その堂々一位に輝いたのは．．．イタリアのミラノでした。同都市では今年の5月から10月まで”the 2015 World Expo”「ミラノ国際博覧会」が開催されます。日本で行われた国際博覧会は2005年に愛知県で開催された「愛・地球博」が記憶に新しいと思います。今年の国際博覧会のテーマは” Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”で、来場客数は2000万人にのぼると予想されており、130以上の国や国際機関が参加する予定だそうです。
今回取り上げるのは”feed”です。「えさを与える、<人など>を養う」という意味がすぐにでてきますが、記事の中では「<川が><湖>に流れ込む」（ジーニアス英和辞典第４版（大修館書店））という意味で使われています。「グランドセンチュリー英和辞典」には、「〔水槽など〕に給水する」という意味がありました。例文に”Melting snow will feed the river”があり、「流れ込む」という意味を持つことが分かります。
博覧会の敷地の中に訪問客が集うためのLake Arenaと呼ばれる巨大な空間が作られる予定です。そこには直径約90ｍの池や噴水があり、その水は市内の運河から引っ張ってくるのだそうです。
