Nankai Trough quake would sway skyscrapers 3-6 meters in metro areas

Skyscrapers in Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka would sway back and forth by 3 to 6 meters in the event of a massive Nankai Trough earthquake off Japan's Pacific coast, a Cabinet Office panel report has shown.

Oscillation speeds for buildings in wide areas of the Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya metro areas is predicted to be roughly 150 centimeters per second or less. Because of the reserve strength of buildings in those areas, long-period ground motions are unlikely to topple tall buildings, the report said. However, the ground motions could trigger elevator halts and fires. If the motions continue longer, people trapped inside the buildings may develop "seasickness." If the building sways by 6 meters, unsecured furniture could fly across the room and injure people.

今回取り上げるのは、“oscillation”という表現です。LDOCEで調べてみると、“to move backwards and forwards in a regular way”という定義が見つかりました。さらに、動詞“oscillate”を『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』で確認してみると、「（振り子のように）振動する、〔2点間を〕揺れる」といった意味が記載されていました。また「〔人の感情などを〕（2つの選択の間で）ぐらつかせる」を意味することから、“oscillation”には「ある2点間で生じる振動、ぐらつき」というニュアンスがあると考えられます。(ninetails)
