Chic, versatile handkerchiefs: Add a touch of color to any outfit

Handkerchiefs are basic items indispensable to personal grooming. However, they are useful for more than just wiping away sweat and drying hands. Large handkerchiefs have become popular accessories that add a bright touch to a person’s appearance when tied to or wrapped around clothing, outfits or parts of the body in the manner of a scarf.

Large, colorful handkerchiefs are displayed at the women’s handkerchief section on the first floor of the Printemps Ginza department store in Chuo Ward, Tokyo. They feature relatively big flower patterns and antique key and clock designs.

今回取り上げる表現は “personal grooming” です。

“groom” は「馬の飼育係」また「花婿」でよく知られていますが, 『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で調べると,「身づくろいをする」という動作も表すことがわかりました。

Dictionary-Cambridge.org には “to make yourself ready to be seen” と定義されています。

上記の英和辞典には “a man badly groomed” で「きたならしい身なりの男」という例が記されていました。今回は “personal grooming” で「身だしなみ」を表現していることがわかります。(Cayu)
