plagiarism 復習

先日、長期留学事前研修中に出てきたplagiarismが下記の記事にも記載されていたので、復習の意を込めて取り上げたいと思います。剽窃や盗作を賛美する動き同様に、最高のお世辞なのではとの声も上がっています。感化、借用、参照、剽窃、これらの間の線引きは一体何なのでしょうか。

The age of the internet, where everything is connected, has made plagiarism both easier to commit and more difficult to hide, as many a student has discovered. It has also exposed writers to new levels of examination, such as the recent allegations that Emma Cline, author of the best-selling novel The Girls, took ideas for the book from her ex-boyfriend’s emails, and the various claims that Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar contender, The Shape of Water, is based on a 1969 play, Let Me Hear You Whisper, or has copied scenes from two French films, Amélie and Delicatessen – allegations which Del Toro, or his representatives, have denied.

　気になったのは見出しにあるplagiarism /ˈpleɪdʒərɪz(ə)m/ です。the highest form of ~ で「〜の最高の現れ」、in praise of ~ で「〜の賛美、賞賛」と訳し、接尾語のismには「行動、状態、主義、理論、特性、教義」の意味が含まれる場合が多いことから、初めは「〜主義」が賛美をうけていると解釈しました。しかし実際の意味は根本から違っていました。『スーパー・アンカー』（第五版、学研プラス）で引いたところ、「（他人の文章・思想などの）盗作、盗用、剽窃、剽窃したもの」と表記されていました。またOnline Etymologyによると、語源はギリシャ語のplagionからラテン語のplagium、そしてラテン語のplagiariusに英語のismが付帯して現在のplagiarismが成り立ったとのことです。

　留学期間中には多くの課題が出されるのはもちろんのこと、特にessayは頻繁に書くことになりそうです。そんな中で誤って他人の著書の一部分を剽窃してしまい退学処分なんてことが絶対に起こらぬよう、英語でのessayの基本ルールは再度網羅し、引用サイトの記載には気をつけようと改めて思いました。（broccoli）
