◆Methane a problem at mine / NZPA

−−−Unusually, the 2.3km mine shaft slopes uphill near the top of the Paparoa Range and features two seams: the Brunner coal measures with just over 58.5 million tonnes of recoverable coal, and the deeper Paparoa measures with an additional eight million tonnes. （※ 上掲図参照）
The 5.5m -wide, 4.5m high tunnel had to pass through the Hawera fault - a 60m-wide zone of fractured rock with a risk of methane gas infiltration sufficient to require flameproof mining equipment to be used.
"Once the tunnel passes through the Hawera fault, expectations of methane (albeit minimal and within approved safe operating limits) associated with the fault zone and the coal measures to the west will require that flameproof, specialist equipment be used," former chief executive Gordon Ward said in June 2008. （以下略）

−−−While the Pike River mine had been developed to exacting modern standards, including safety, Mr Wood said he ''wasn't overly optimistic'' of the miners making it out alive and feared its death toll could rival that of the worst New Zealand mining disasters.
He suspected an electrical fault ignited undetected methane a gas present in coal mines but usually piped away causing a gas explosion.
That smoke had been seen coming from the mine last night ''doesn't bode well'', Mr Wood said.
It had echoes of the 1967 Strongman mine explosion, which killed 19 miners.
Pike River had a ventilation shaft, which may still be unblocked.
''If they haven't been killed by explosion or carbon monoxide they might get some air ... but I don't know.'' （中略）
The rise of opencast mining brought greater levels of safety, and there was growing intolerance of injury that had once been accepted as part of a miner's life. By the early 21st century, the mining industry had brought in its own codes of practice and there was Government regulation on mines, the website said. （以下略）
※ 事故原因はまだ特定出来ていない様子。ＮＺで唯一上場している鉱山会社である Pike River Coal Ltd 社は最新の安全設備を完備していた様ですが、それでも事故が起こりました。 炭鉱 - Wikipedia に 『ガス爆発 / 石炭を含む炭層には、石炭が生成される時の副産物としてメタンガスが溜まっている事が多い。このメタンガスの存在が、爆発事故を誘発しやすくしている。特に閉鎖空間での作業が強いられる坑道掘りでは、メタンガスの濃度を常時監視する必要がある。しかし最新の設備を充実させてもガス爆発を防ぐ抜本的な解決法は21世紀初頭になっても確立されておらず、途上国の炭鉱では度々事故が発生している。 ガス突出 / 上記したようなメタンガスを大量に含む個所を掘り抜いた時に発生する。メタンガスそのものは人体には無害だが、閉鎖空間の坑内で大量に突出すると酸欠状態となり窒息死する。また一酸化炭素などの有毒ガスが同時に溜まっている場合、ガス中毒者を出す事がある。また、可燃性のメタンガスが一挙に噴出する為、直後にガス爆発などが発生する事が多い。』 とありますが、その通りですね。

ニュージーランドの石炭生産量は少ないですが、低品位の亜瀝青炭は国内発電向け、高品質瀝青炭は輸出向けに生産しています。原料炭は全量輸出され貴重な調達先となっています。炭質は灰分、硫黄成分が低いことが特徴で、2008 年の生産量470 万トンのおよそ半分の260 万トンが日本、ブラジルなどへ輸出されています。
