One of the most successful Japanese pro baseball players is celebrating another milestone with a new team. Masahiro Tanaka signed with the New York Yankees. He's now the fifth most expensive pitcher in the history of the U.S. Major Leagues and the most expensive from Japan.

"The New York Yankees are a world-famous team, and they've shown they attach the greatest possible value to my skills. I think I can start the next phase of my career on a new note."

The Yankees signed Tanaka to a seven-year contract. It's reportedly worth 155 million dollars.
Tanaka is 25 years old. He's been playing in northeastern Japan with the Rakuten Golden Eagles. He set a Japanese pro record last year by winning 24 games in a row. He completed the season with no losses and he led his team to its first title in the Japan Series.

"I want the New York Yankees to become world champions, so I hope my pitching contributes to the team's victory."

The Yankees signed him under a new system that allows Japanese players who are not free agents to negotiate contracts with Major League clubs.
