The Japanese government is wrestling with the problem of goods made in other countries closely based on "Made in Japan" products. One counter-measure is the plan to join an international system protecting intellectual property.
The Japanese patent office has found that manufacturers in China and other countries are selling knock-off products around the world. Copied Japanese designs include those for motorbikes and electric appliances.
The government is applying to join the Hague Agreement, which allows for sales to be suspended for products that violate the rules of the agreement. A registered member of the Geneva-based World Intellectual Property Organization needs only a single application to register a product in 46 nations and regions.
China is also planning to join the Hague Agreement. The Japanese government expects its membership will be finalized in May.
