Kirsty Young's castaway is the actress Dame Harriet Walter.

She has been a stalwart of the stage for more than three decades - winning great acclaim for her work with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. Performing ran in the family - her uncle is the actor Christopher Lee and she remembers how, as a child, he would make her shriek by putting on his famous 'Mummy' walk to scare her. She turned down a place at Oxford because she knew she wanted to act - only to find that the drama schools weren't keen on her... she was turned down five times before securing a place.

She says she has never thought about making clever career choices, but, in the year in which she has been made a dame, turned sixty and married for the first time, she says it has all turned out better than she ever expected.

As part of the Light Fantastic Festival, this week's Words and Music is on the theme of the 1950s with music, poetry and prose from the decade.

Producer's Note

As part of Radio 3’s Light Fantastic festival, this week’s Words and Music takes a trip through the 1950s. The programme begins with one of Malcolm Arnold’s ‘English Dances’ followed by ‘Aubade’ by Donald Davie. Davie was one of the poets who became known collectively during the decade as The Movement, a group of writers which included Kingsley Amis, Elizabeth Jennings and Thom Gunn, all of whose work also appears in the programme.

Two early poems by Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes are both set in Yorkshire and are heard with Walton’s ‘Cello Concerto’ and Milhaud’s ‘Symphony no 8’, written about the Rhone River and portraying the river in the early morning mist of a soft dawn. The jazz of the 50s is heard alongside Philip Larkin’s ‘Spring’. Larkin was one of our greatest writers on jazz and was a fan of the work of Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk and Ornette Coleman: in Miles Davis’ music he detected a ‘bleak pastoralism’, something which can be heard in Larkin’s own work.

Two of the great novels of the 1950s, Iris Murdoch’s ‘The Bell’ and Kingsley Amis’ ‘Lucky Jim’ also feature. The programme ends with Dylan Thomas’ best known poem, ‘Do not go gentle into that good night’, written for his dying father only two years before Thomas’s own death in 1953.

Originally in folk-jazz group Lammas, leader of a regular band at London's Pizza Express and then recruited to join Chick Corea, Tim Garland is now one of Britain's best known jazz saxophonists. As part of the BBC's Light Fantastic Festival, Radio 3's Jazz Line-Up is staging the BBC Big Band, conducted by Barry Forgie and staring jazz vocalist and presenter of Jazz Line-Up Claire Martin. They take a trip down memory lane, saluting the broadcasting big bands from the last 80 years. All time classics include Oranges and Lemons, Indian Lament, Caravan, The Man I Love and The Continental. And all this recorded before an audience at The Clore Ballroom at Royal Festival Hall, on London's Southbank.
