fRoots Reviews

BELLA HARDY Battleplan Noe NOE06

There are many levels on which to admire Bella Hardy. That voice, of course – so vulnerable, exposed and unadorned – will always be her greatest weapon of mass distraction but, as we first discovered with Three Black Feathers over five years ago, she’s also one of the best songwriters of her generation, even while most people probably still consider her main forte to be traditional material, though what this collection perhaps proves is that intrinsically they frequently blur into one.

Various recent asides – notably her Christmas album and her recent interpretations of standards with the Laylam project – have shown she can also add versatility and ingenuity to the list of commendations. More impressive still is her fearless sense of adventure. Constantly eschewing the soft, easy option, she’s always been willing to back herself with a punt into different territory… which is a key factor as Battleplan shifts her on to yet another new level.

From Mary Ann Haynes and Phoebe Smith to June Tabor and Bellowhead, Flash Company/Yellow Handkerchief has been through the mill over the years but, over a bold piano arrangement, Hardy approaches it anew with a stirring sense of tragedy. Similarly, another well-worn trad classic True Hearted Girl is treated with the sort of stern solemnity guaranteed to carve you in half.

Tracks are roughly split equally between the tradition and her own material but the join is neat and unobtrusive. Opening track Good Man’s Wife, for one, is fully imbued with the majesty and epic storytelling of the great ballad from whose root it stems, but a lively arrangement and Anna Massie’s joyous banjo somehow help propel it somewhere else… somewhat bizarrely, here, into the realms of Kate Bush and Army Dreamers. This mixing and matching of trad themes to trigger new ideas with modern lyrics is fast becoming a feature of the new breed of folk songwriters and more than any of her previous albums, Battleplan shows Bella Hardy at the very heart of it. The Seventh Girl – her impossibly catchy take on The Outlandish Knight – is a convincing case in point and she even dips into John Tams territory with a thoughtful arrangement of the shanty One More Day. Her poppier material tends to be less convincing but she has come up with one stark, arresting song, Maybe You Might that wouldn’t sound out of place in the sad, reflective scene of an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical and sounds like a standard waiting to happen.

She’s backed – with an unusual mix of drama and sensitivity – by a band, The Mountain Watch with Angus Lyon (keys, accordeon), James Lindsay (bass), Anna Massie (guitar/ banjo) and Mattie Foulds (drums), who also doubles as producer and should perhaps garner much of the glory for a recording quality strong in character and engaging in clarity.

Bella Hardy comes from the Derbyshire Peak District village of Edale, and was immersed in the local folk culture from an early age. She is one of a new wave of young English folk musicians, singing as well as playing the folk fiddle, and writing her own songs as well as singing traditional ones. In 2008 she sang unaccompanied in the Royal Albert Hall as part of the first Folk Prom. In her new album, she says she has taken a more directly personal approach in the songwriting than in her previous work.

Michael Berkeley's guest is the Laurence Olivier award-winning director Declan Donnellan, who co-founded Cheek by Jowl theatre company with Nick Ormerod in 1981. He has directed Shakespearian productions for the RSC, and a wide range of work for Cheek by Jowl, including Shakespeare, Restoration comedy, Jacobean tragedy, and plays by Corneille, Racine, Chekhov and Pushkin, as well as an adaptation of Dickens's 'Great Expectations'. In 1993 he directed the smash hit National Theatre production of Sweeney Todd. A specialist in French and Russian drama, he directed the 2012 film of Maupassant's 'Bel-Ami', starring Uma Thurman and Christina Ricci, and has directed Le Cid at the Avignon Festival and Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. His current Cheek by Jowl production is a French-language version of Alfred Jarry's satire 'Ubu Roi', which is touring in the UK and abroad.

His music choices include traditional Irish music, 19th-century ballet excerpts and operas by Mozart and Verdi.

Dragons, damsels, storms and the terrors of the Underworld confront the hero on his journey in this edition of Words and Music on the theme of Quest.

Jasper Britton and Imogen Stubbs read poetry and prose ranging from Homer, Malory and Tennyson to T H White, Frank L Baum and U.A. Fanthorpe, with music by Monteverdi, Purcell, Bartok, Dvorák, Richard Strauss, Birtwistle and Arvo Pärt.

Producer's Note

The Quest is one of the oldest themes in literature. The further the protagonist travels away from home the more he (and it’s usually a he) develops spiritually. I can trace the inspiration for this programme back to the age of twelve when I was taken to Drury Lane to see the musical Camelot, starring Laurence Harvey as King Arthur - in the role made famous on Broadway by Richard Burton. The show made a deep impression and I became obsessed with tales of King Arthur and read T H White’s The Once and Future King , on which the musical was based. Eventually I went on to read Malory’s Morte d’Arthur.

My second inspiration was reading Joseph Campbell’s book, The Hero With A Thousand Faces, in which he compares world mythologies and points out they share a fundamental structure and certain universal themes. The film producer George Lucas read Campbell’s book and it became the basis for the structure of Star Wars, and subsequently many other cinematic blockbusters and it still wields a strong influence on Hollywood screenwriters.

The programme starts with the opening lines of one of the oldest works of western literature, The Odyssey. Homer’s hero Odysseus is on a quest to return home after the Trojan War, where his wife Penelope has been patiently awaiting him for twenty years. Penelope’s passive role is typical of most female characters in quest-themed literature. The other common female part is that of the Temptress. I have included in the programme an aria by Bradamante who features in Handel’s opera Alcina and is an interesting character as she sets out on a quest herself to recapture her man from the arms of another woman. Dorothy is another notable female quest heroine and so I follow The Odyssey with an extract from The Wizard of Oz.

Less obvious choices include an extracts from Dvo?ák’s lovely symphonic poem The Golden Spinning Wheel and Bartok’s work The Miraculous Mandarin. In the Dvorak piece the quest is to put back together the heroine who has had the misfortune to be chopped up. Bartok’s ‘Pantomime Ballet’ The Miraculous Mandarin is the story of a Mandarin’s determination to win a young dancing girl.

The programme ends with the end of King Arthur’s quest – which involves the destruction of the Round Table and all it stood for, but also carries a promise for the future.
