いつものように唐突に切り出しますが、実は先週アメリカのヒラリー国務長官がタンザニアに来ました。

タンザニアーアメリカ間の関係を強固にするため、そしてアメリカによる
タンザニアへの支援※を表明するためです。
※今回打ち出された内容
　栄養状態改善（特に乳児）のための支援・農業支援・電力事情改善のため
　の支援の拡大を表明。

　（余談ですが、アメリカはタンザニア海軍の訓練も支援しているようです。
　　これに関するさらなる支援も今回タンザニアの大統領はアメリカに要請
　　しました。
　　私の元同僚の彼ももしかしたら今頃アメリカ軍から訓練を受けているの
　　でしょうか・・・。）

このクリントン国務長官の来訪はタンザニアの現地新聞各紙で一面になり結構
大きなニュースでした。
ザンビア→タンザニア→エチオピアという順番で東アフリカのうちの３カ国を
計５日間でまわったようです。

そして少し驚きましたが、オバマ政権は成長のための新しいパートナーシップ（通称PFG、Partnership for Growth）の４カ国の
うちの１つにタンザニアを指定しているのです。
※他の３カ国…ガーナ・フィリピン・エルサルバドル

ガーナはタンザニアと同じくアフリカ大陸にある国で、西アフリカの大国です。

タンザニアのある東アフリカはどうかというと、正直ケニアなどのほうが同じ東アフリカのなかでも発達しています。
なぜタンザニアを上記の１カ国にしているのかは定かではありませんが、今回の訪問もふまえてタンザニアをアフリカにおける
対外政策上の相手としてある程度重要視していることは言えるのかもしれません。

ではタンザニアから見たアメリカについてですが、ざっくり言えば、対アメリカ感情は悪くない、とタンザニア人と接していて
感じる印象です。

特にオバマ大統領はかなり有名で、普段新聞も読まない、ラジオやテレビもほとんど利用する機会がない私の生徒も全員オバマ
大統領のことを知っています。

そして、何を隠そう、オバマ大統領グッズはタンザニアの至るところで売られているのです。

オバマノート・オバマベルト（バックルの部分にオバマ大統領の写真付き）・
オバマバック（ＯＢＡＭＡという大きな文字＆写真付き）・

オバマペン・オバママイク、などなど挙げだしたらきりがないです。

なんでそんなに有名なのかというと、彼がアフリカ系の大統領であることが大きな要因を
占めていると思われます。

私の生徒も「オバマ大統領はケニア出身だ」と誇らしげに言っておりました。
（もちろん彼はアメリカ人です。父がケニア人なのでそう言っているのでしょう。）

はるか海を渡ってここタンザニアでオバマ大統領のグッズが出回っていることを
大統領はご存じでしょうか。

Good afternoon. How are you?

I take up a new subject abruptly as usual,but U.S. Secretary, Hillary Clinton
came to Tanzania last week.

The reason of that is deepening the US-Tanzania bilateral relations and announcing some projects※ to Tanzania.
※Those projects are the ones about nutrition(especially for babies), agriculture and electricity.

　（By the way U.S. is supporting the training of the Tanzanian navy as well.
　　Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete expected more assistance of U.S. to help the navy this time.
　　Possibly my former coworker might get the training from American navies...)

The vist of U.S. Secretary Clinton was a big news in Tanznia and so it was reported at the top of the front page
in local newspapers.
She visited Zanmbia, followed by Tanzania and Ethiopia within 5 days.

Moreover, surprisingly, Tanzania was chosen one of the four countries in U.S. President Barack Obama's
new Partnership for Growth (PFG) initiative, apart from Ghana, El Salvador and the Philippines.

Ghana is a developed country in Western Africa.

When it comes to Eastern Africa, in which Tanzania is located, in fact, other countires like Kenya are more
industrialised than Tanzania. Although I cannnot conclude the reason why U.S. chose Tanzania as one country of PFG,
it might be said that U.S. is putting　an importance on Tanzania about foreign policies to some extent.

Next, in regards to how Tanzanian people think U.S., I feel that they have not bad feelings to
U.S as far as I can judge from the communication with local people.

Especially President Obama is very famous and all of my students, who can rarely have access
to newspaper, redio or TV, know him.

Moreover, you can buy various kinds of goods of President Obama anywhere in Tanzania.

An Obama notebook,an Obama belt(which has a picture of him on its backle),
an Obama bag (which his name "OBAMA" is written and his picture is put), an Obama microphone
and so on. I cannot point out all the good here.

The main reason why he is such famous and popular is that he is an African- American.

My students proudly said, " President Obama is from Kenya!"
(Of course he is an American. They said so because his father is a Kenyan.)

I wonder whether he knows that many goods of him appear everywhere in a faraway country,Tanzania.
